In the latest episode of Nexus Connects Us, the discussion delves into a commonly overlooked issue – sleep apnea in women. While the condition is often associated with men, the reality is that many women are also affected by it. Lisa Moler makes a return to the show to share her enlightening personal journey towards a sleep apnea diagnosis.
Lisa opens up about the hurdles she faced, from being dismissed by several doctors to finally receiving a diagnosis from a chiropractor. Her story highlights a concerning trend where women’s symptoms are often overlooked or attributed to factors such as age, hormones, or lifestyle within the healthcare system.
The episode emphasizes a key message: Self-advocacy. It’s a call to arms for everyone to take proactive steps towards understanding and prioritizing their health. Listeners are encouraged to document symptoms, prepare questions for appointments, and ensure their concerns are effectively communicated to their healthcare providers.
On the flip side, the dialogue also urges medical professionals to adopt a more inquisitive approach, abandon outdated diagnostic methods, and commit to continuous learning. A notable mention is made about the role dentists can play in identifying sleep-related issues.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and other sleep-related breathing disorders affect an estimated 20 million Americans. As many as 70 million are undiagnosed with potentially life threatening consequences. And it's not just big guys who are impacted. Nearly 1 in 5 women have sleep apnea, but 9 out of 10 women who have it, don't realize it.
And it doesn't affect just adults. 2-3% of children are believed to have sleep apnea, with the disorder believed to be as high as 10-20% in children who habitually snore.
