Today's Guest: Chris Chism, Superintendent of Education, Pearl High School [email protected] With a dynamic career in educational leadership spanning 28 years, Chris Chism stands as a transformative figure in the Pearl Public School District. As a Mississippi State University alumnus with a deep expertise in educational technology and data-driven instruction, Chris has carved a niche in educational excellence. His commitment to data utilization and artificial intelligence in education is evident in his speaking engagements, where he has delivered over 75 presentations state-wide, influencing policies and practices from the classroom to the boardroom. In his role as Superintendent, Chris's visionary leadership is reflected in the accolades and recognitions bestowed upon him and the institutions he leads. Notably, he was twice honored as Administrator of the Year by the Pearl Public School District and recognized as a Practitioner of Distinction by the University of Mississippi School of Education. His innovative approach to education has not only resulted in Pearl High School's significant improvement in graduation rates but also in achieving one of the highest rates in the state, especially for special education students. Chris’s influence extends to his presidency at the Mississippi Professional Educators and his active role as a board member, shaping educational policy and administration. His dedication to academic, athletic, and fine arts excellence is highlighted by Pearl High School's 41 state championships under his 7-year tenure, all while maintaining a strong academic record as demonstrated by the numerous “Scholar Athletic Teams” recognitions. Chris has been a pivotal leader in community service, spearheading record-setting food drives and supporting the elderly through initiatives like “Team Up to Clean Up” during the pandemic. Dot Murphy Dot Murphy worked for the Hinds athletic department for 33 years, where she served as the assistant athletic director before her retirement in 2018. She became the first female football coach in National Junior College Athletic Association history when she was hired to coach wide receivers at Hinds in 1984. In March 1999, she was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame for her career as a basketball standout and was also listed as one of Mississippi’s top 50 Athletes of the Century in Sports Illustrated. Murphy is a Mississippi University for Women graduate, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. At MUW, she received All-American honors, was selected as Rookie of the Year in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (NIT) and was a member of the United States Women’s Basketball team in 1972 and 1973, where she was a silver medalist in the World University Games in Moscow, Russia in 1973. After receiving her master of education degree from Mississippi State University, Murphy coached women’s basketball at various stops before coming to Hinds. The Starkville High School graduate is married to Gene, and the couple has three children; son Kelly, and daughters Ashley and Jennifer, along with six grandchildren. She’ll be serving as a liaison to the community and a wide variety of referral partners on treatment-related questions. As a Certified Event Interventionist and Certified Recovery Peer Specialist, Melissa will also be a resource to families and individuals who need support with interventions and/or finding quality care for addiction or other mental health issues. Her wide-ranging, professional experience—in the behavioral health, business development, hospitality, and non-profit worlds—makes her uniquely suited for this role. She has served as a volunteer member of Broward Sheriff Office's clergy and is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Deerfield Beach. A lifelong Floridian, Melissa recently graduated magna cum laude from Florida Atlantic University with a B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in Hospitality and Events. She is also in successful, long-term recovery herself, which is one big reason she’s passionate about serving in this role: “I know that a dramatic life change is possible,” she said in a recent interview. “I love to sprinkle hope! I am passionate about being part of the solution to erase the stigma that is attached to getting treatment and being in recovery.”
