Natural Order Podcast
Brian D. O'Leary & Adam Haman
The Natural Order Podcast examines our world using the lenses of: political philosophy, economics, history, and the nature of humanity. Hosts and independent media personalities, Adam Haman and Brian O'Leary, collaborate weekly using these "lenses" as a way to interpret today's world. Haman is a 30-year veteran of the professional poker world and is now in leadership at the Libertarian Party of Nevada. O'Leary operates briandoleary.com and hosts The Brian D. O'Leary Show which brings the listener "Serious Content Amidst an Unserious Culture."
Let's chat about the Libertarian Party
The fellows continue their discussion on of the first of their “four pillars”—libertarian political philosophy. Today, Haman and O'Leary drill-down on the Libertarian Party, the Mises Caucus, and Adam’s work in the leadership of the Libertarian Party of Nevada. Today’s show brought to you by Liberty Classroom   The Libertarian Party: What makes “the party of principle” different from all the others? What about the roads? Oh yeah, statist? What about them there roads? Here, get educated: Walter Block’s The Privatization of Roads and Highways: Human and Economic Factors Non-libertarians reflexively believe that many “public goods” such as roads cannot be provided (or cannot be sufficiently provided) by a free market. Block’s big book on the subject shows exactly how wrong-headed that belief is. This episode builds on concepts discussed in episode 1 of The Natural Order Podcast, so you might want to check out those show notes too! Anarchy v. Minarchy? This is scarcely the final word on the subject, but find some food for thought in this written debate. Undo the Revolutionary War?!? Despite their profound differences regarding the nature of government, Brian says he would happily take either Hamilton or Jefferson over our current leadership. In fact, compared to today’s regime, he would even prefer Mad King George III! He’s got a point! Check out this brilliant book that contains (among many many other brilliant things) an argument about why monarchy (as bad as that is) is preferable to “unfettered” democracy: Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s Democracy the God that Failed. Worship the Constitution? No thanks. The US Constitution is a magnificent document. Our modern society would be much improved if we more closely followed the principles in it. But as Lysander Spooner said: “Whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain – that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.” Amen. On the other hand, maybe ole’ Spooner was just cross because those old-timey Feds “rolled the tanks” on him for opening up his own mail service in competition with the Post Office. Dave Smith debates Nick Sarwark on the strategy and future of the Libertarian Party Part One – at the Soho Forum in New York. Part Two – only a snippet from Dave’s Part of the Problem Podcast. What is libertarian political philosophy all about?
"Anarcho-Capitalism" & More... The first episode of the Natural Order Podcast is here! Hosts Brian O’Leary and Adam Haman start things off with a discussion of one of their "four pillars" by which they seek to find Natural Order. In this case, libertarian political philosophy.  Today’s show brought to you by Liberty Classroom   Do you have too many friends? Agree with all the talking heads on TV and the "regime" politicians? We can fix that! Libertarianism In the early stages of this project, we imagined—then produced—a few episodes dedicated to "A Podcast about Our Podcast." However, those episodes are "waiting in the bullpen" as we've decided to wait and release these "prequels" at a later date. But, we did go back into the archives and pulled out one of the gems... This is what we had to say about libertarianism (paraphrasing): Political philosophy has always had a central tension between the rights of the individual versus what the individual “owes” to society. For most of human history, collectivism and tribalism dominated this discussion. The rise of individual rights wasn’t “destined” and humanity can (and does) revert to authoritarianism on many issues and in many times and places. The best history of the "rise and fall" of theories of individual liberty throughout man’s time on earth that we know of is Gerard Casey’s Freedom's Progress?: A History of Political Thought. The question mark carries a lot of meaning in that title. Individual liberty is uncommon. It comes in fits and starts. Most importantly, it should never be taken for granted. Many brilliant minds have contributed to the growing corpus of libertarian political philosophy, which comes in two very distinct strands, “minarchism” (describing the minimal state) and “anarcho-capitalism” or “voluntaryism” (describing a thriving society completely free from monopolistic government). Here are a few of our favorites from each: (You can find links to these books and others at the Natural Order Book Club page.) Minarchism: Ron Paul’s The Revolution: A Manifesto – The good doctor’s pitch for liberty during his campaigns for the presidency. Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged – A powerful and emotional exploration of deep themes regarding the moral and economic case for freedom. A masterpiece. Robert Nozick’s Anarchy, State, & Utopia – A very thorough and persuasive argument from a well-known and main stream philosopher. Winner of the 1975 National Book Award! Mary Ruwart’s Healing Our World in an Age of Aggression – If Rand and Paul seem a little too “right-wingy” for your tastes, check out Dr. Ruwart’s classic work, emphasizing the peace and harmony and abundance that spring from libertarianism. Anarcho-capitalism: Kris Borer’s The Ethics of Anarcho-Capitalism – A modern “Robinson Crusoe” tale that brilliantly highlights the real-world contexts that give rise to interpersonal conflict – and how anarcho-capitalism ethically solves such conflicts. Murray Rothbard’s Anatomy of the State – Short and devastatingly powerful. You’ll never look at monopolistic government the same way again. Murray Rothbard’s For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto – A classic from “Mr. Libertarian. Murray Rothbard’s The Ethics of Liberty – A master class in Natural Law theory and libertarianism. Michael Huemer’s The Problem of Political Authority – A devastating attack (from every conceivable angle) of statism. After reading it, you’re reflexive acquiescence of the existence (and morality) of state power will vanish. And of course, there are many many more. Factions in America’s founding: Are you a Jeffersonian or a Hamiltonian? Never thought about it? Check out this cool debate to help you pick a side. Factionalism is fun! https://youtu.be/OeE_s1Gw7X4 The Libertarian Party: Feel like joining the libertarian movement? Just want to help out? Check out The Libertarian Party. Also check out the caucus of the LP that Adam is proud to consider himself a member of, the Mises Caucus. Hey "fatty!" Lose some weight! In regards to libertarianism, are you thick or are you thin? The brilliant Walter Block has some thoughts that might help you decide.
