Lycaon: The Ancient Werewolf of Greek Mythology & Ovid's Metamorphoses
The story of Lycaon (also spelled Lykaion, Lykaon) has been told by many dating back to Ancient Greece, where it was attested in works like Pausanias' Description of Greece, Apollodorus' Library, and Hyginus' Astronomica, and across centuries and civilizations through works like Ovid's masterpiece Metamorphoses. Lycaon's attempt to deceive the gods leads to a terrifying transformation, which many have described as the oldest depiction of a werewolf, wolf-man, or lycanthrope. The story of Lycaon, his test of the god Zeus, and his transformation as punishment is not just a great scary story; it provides insight into Ancient Greek customs of morality such hubris and as hospitality (Xenia.) Like the best of gothic and modern horror, the story of Lycaon explores the fine line between man and monster. Finding God in Nature: The Natural World in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
Spiritual seekers from across religious traditions have had profound experiences within the natural world. Comparing the role of nature in selected Jewish, Christian, and Muslim teachings demonstrates the harmonious role that nature serves in the Abrahamic religions. Jesus' parables of the sower and the fig trees in the Gospels show how we can be inspired by the natural world to change ourselves; te Jewish principle of bal tashchit demonstrates how nature informs ethics; and the Quran's invitations to discernment along with the writings of Sufi mystic poets such as Ibn 'Arabi and Rumi show how the visible world can inform us of the transcendent. Beyond the Surface: The Human Psyche in Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid
Hans Christian Andersen's original telling of The Little Mermaid is probably very different from the one you know. The mermaid's transformation is far less pleasant, there is no mention of true love's kiss, and what is she doing with that knife? A close reading and a look into the life of Hans Christian Andersen, a liminal figure caught between two societies, shows a powerful message that applies to each of us. The Mythical Battle of the Irish Gods: The Tuatha Dé Danann and Fomoire at Maige Tuired
Many people have encountered Ireland over the millennia. The Emerald Isle has hosted scholars and poets, as well as fierce warriors and mighty High Kings. All have been touched by the land differently, and no one has left the same. We see this in the oldest stories of the old Celtic gods, the Tuatha Dé Danann, including figures such as the Dagda, the Morrigan, and Lugh, and their battle against the Fomoire, the fierce anti-gods including Elatha, Bres, and Balor, the giant champion with a destructive evil eye. Cath Maige Tuired (Mag Tuired or Moytura) details from the mysterious arrival of the gods in Ireland to their battle with the Fomorians, and gives us glances into ancient Irish culture and spirituality through its depictions of war and peace. Philosophy, Mythology, and Meaning in Plato's Gorgias: A Deep Dive into Ancient Wisdom with 60 Second Philosophy
An in-depth podcast conversation exploring philosophy, mythology, rhetoric, justice, the Ancient Greek afterlife, and more! Plato's Gorgias is not one of his most famous dialogues, but is one of the most mysterious and thought-provoking, as Socrates discusses virtue with some of Classical Athens' most prolific thinkers. The dialogue ends with a fantastic account of the last judgement, in which Socrates ponders the nature of the eternal soul. So, naturally, it took a philosopher and a mythographer teaming up to discuss it! I am pleased to be joined by Matt of 60-Second Philosophy as we go deep into the ancient text. Together. 60 Second Philosophy is a series of short, interrelated videos designed to teach you big ideas in a small amount of time! We watch year after year of college students go through introduction to philosophy courses and come out confused and disenchanted.  This is largely because professors rarely teach the subject with any life or vigor, even more rarely do they show philosophy as a study which is applicable to life.  We believe that philosophy is an integral part of our world, and that  the study of philosophy is incredibly useful in daily life. Our approach is to offer information in short, accessible videos which allow viewers to only learn about that which interests them. These videos create paths which viewers can easily follow and, if they choose, cover vast tracts of the western philosophical tradition in a very short time.

Forest Bathing (Shinrin Yoku): Nature Therapy in Shinto & Japanese Folktales
The Japanese Ministry of Forestry promotes mindful time in nature, called forest bathing, citing health benefits for those in urban environments to spend time in the natural world. This video explores the deep reverence for nature at the heart of Japanese culture, through the lens of Shinto, Japan's indigenous religion, and traditional folk tales. I spend some time in nature to try forest bathing for myself, and share the experience, results, and connections to traditional Japanese culture. Coyote stories are found in traditional folklore across North America, with the trickster figure one of the most recurring characters in Native American mythology. The three legends which we will share today show a variety of themes in Coyote myths, and how similar the spirit animal is to us, living in the space between the animal and the divine.
