At the age of 24, Jordan Barnes woke up next to a corpse, rifled through his dead friends’ pockets for any remaining heroin and went right back to using. Strung out and homeless during the supposed best years of his life, there was no clear way out of the Opioid Crisis ravaging the streets of Portland, Oregon. But though Jordan had long accepted his fate, his parents still held out hope, and would do everything in their power to get him the help he so desperately needed. After a harrowing journey that proves the life of an addict will always get worse, never better, Jordan found himself at the gates of Sand Island, Hawaii’s most notorious two-year inpatient treatment facility. He soon discovers that though his heart was in the right place, the hardest battle of his life was yet to come. One Hit Away is his arduous and unlikely true story of recovery, rehabilitation and redemption. Jordan Barnes is a grateful addict in recovery, and Sand Island Treatment Center is his home group. When he’s not sharing his experience, strength, and hope through writing, he enjoys bodysurfing and diving, as well as long walks on the beach while swinging his metal detector. Jordan resides in beautiful Kailua, HI. He has been sober from all mind and mood-altering substances since August 29th, 2011. One Hit Away is his debut memoir and it releases today! It can be purchased on Amazon. Visit jordanpbarnes.com for more and follow Jordan on social media @JordanPBarnes. To MSE's listeners and supporters, thank you.
I began MSE with the goal of raising awareness, addressing stigma, and starting the conversations we all need to have. Two seasons, nearly 100 episodes and guests later, we've done just that.
I cannot let this day pass without expressing gratitude for the incredible guests I have had the pleasure of hosting thus far. You all have shown up with sincerity and courage, sharing stories that many of us would allow fear to talk us out of.
It is with the MSE community in mind that I have created the "MSE Podcast Conversation Starters" Deck that are now available for order here: bygracenp.com/podcast

In this episode, Kay and Kevin discuss Kevin’s experience growing up black in white. Accomplished writer and public speaker Kevin Hofmann has appeared across the United States sharing his experience and guiding parents, students and professionals through today’s multicultural landscape. His perspective and light-hearted yet contemplative view resonates with people of all cultures and is sought by many. Kevin has been interviewed by media including Nightline ABC and NPR and is quickly becoming a trusted voice on the topics of race and adoption.
Kevin’s layered racial resume has led him to write Growing Up Black in White, a compelling memoir revealing his difficulties and joys growing up in a diverse family –particularly during a time and in a location where acceptance was tentative and emotions regarding race ran high and hot. Because his story also addresses the impact of race and culture in society, it serves as a catalyst for open discussions on diversity and inclusion as well as race and culture. Kevin has worked with several K-12 school districts, universities, and adoption agencies as a consultant in the area of cultural intelligence. Website- http://www.kevinhofmann.com

In this episode, Kay and Cheryl discuss how Cheryl's journey to advocacy unfolded after being told as a young girl that the injustice she saw was not her problem to solve. Cheryl Hanson has had the opportunity to enjoy a career working professionally and volunteering in the non-profit sector. She has been blessed to serve with many organizations like African Leadership, Refugees Ministries, World Vision, Second Harvest Food Bank, Feeding America and various other organizations working with different communities of immigrants, homeless, gang members, and prisoners. While working within these communities through the years, she has grown to learn from, appreciate and develop a love for those from very different walks of life. She has seen in her work that we must NOT group people into large categories of race, faith groups, politics or orientation, but see them as individuals with their own unique stories. In these days of division and vitriolic language being thrown at each other, we must practice “Radical Compassion” towards each other. Cheryl has partnered with the international organization, Preemptive Love and has developed a program called “Gatherings” in Nashville where people from different cultures, races, faiths, politics are able to come together in an environment where everyone has a voice, a place to be heard and valued. The idea is to promote healing from all that is tearing us apart by listening to each others’ stories, understanding the struggles of the marginalized and minorities, and seeing one another through eyes of compassion. These connections foster empathy and compassion so that when we face the fears and anger in the world or disagree with our neighbors, our first choice will be understanding and Radical Compassion. Cheryl is married to Brian, a concert artist and mother of three wonderful, amazing children. Join MSE’s growing podcast community on social media Instagram and Facebook: @msepodcast.
