Listen, photographers are creative people THEY would rather shoot than deal with business. You have to do a ton of things besides shoot photos in order to run a photography business - advertising - - marketing - accounting - - shooting - editing - - retouching - emails -  - phone calls -  - scheduling -  - confirming -  appointments -  and I can go on and on. New photographers (some) DO NOT KNOW what they are doing! I gather that they WANT IT IMMEDIATELY Want to wake up one day to tell  the world.. that they are a photographer without educating themselves on how to run a business or interning with a REAL photographer, paying their dues and learning the ropes - as it should be. -  If a photographer offers to do -  a shoot and put - 10 to 50 edited images on a CD -  - THEY WILL BE OUT OF BUSINESS VERY SOON! -  Not to mention the fact that -  THEY ARE HURTING - THE ENTIRE PHOTOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY! If the photographer does not have INSURANCE, BIG problem! If a photographer does not have a sales tax ID or know they laws in their city / state, they could be fined as well as end up owing thousands of dollars and yes, go out of business. You as a Client will be sued too. Photographers that do as little as possible to get the job done and do not care about the client should NEVER be photographers! You have to know photography, business and create a cost of doing business (codb) in order to KNOW your pricing. If you have to make $300 per job to stay in business and you are charging $100 for the shoot and the disc, then you are going $200 in debt every time you charge $100! Instead charge a creative fee of $150 with a minimum order of $150 - then you will make a minimum of - $300 EVERY TIME! Endless discussions of the exact definition of the word “purple.”    Finding a transport to go to    Middle of nowhere     At 6am in the morning.     Sourcing models.    Hiring crew and onboarding them.     maintaining an accurate and efficient payroll system.  Applying for city shooting permits. THATS THE FUN ONE     Issuing insurance certs.      Paying insurance bills.       multiple hours of creative calls on Zoom.       Shooting.       Editing.       Oh, and trying not to forget to feed the dog. and doing groceries for home.         I’ve done all within the last 72 hours?         you’d be right.  Do you still think  you are a professional Photographer?  (with a crazy face)   Of course, this is not to say that the shooting and creativity part isn’t important. . But as your business progresses, you will find that you will need to  grow your business to survive  just as much,  if not more than  your skills with the camera.   And just like your artistic development,  your business education will be a    never-ending process.  Just when you think  you’ve got it all figured out, the game will throw you a new challenge, and you will suddenly be forced to learn  how to do something new.  Okay, Don't Be Sad. Robert Kiyosaki A lot of people are complaining that,  Photography business is drowning'   Yes the bottom 80% of the photography market is collapsing.    Some photog forget to include  a couple of items in the Pricing criteria.   Uniqueness of the image  and what your value is to them.  Big corporate and advertising clients want to be bullet proof   i am being serious here!  and they want the photographer  to bring something to the table    besides your expensive cute little camera and crew. It's not a joke  Many clients go to a photographer for production quality  and extreme talent  which filters out most photographers.  Here is the worst part  Additionally schools keep producing  photography students without teaching them How to run a business.  this is stupid   There will always be ankle biters  and the fact that equipment is so light now  reducing the need for assistants  and that Adobe and Luminar  had make it possible to make  crappy images acceptable,   So, instead of complaining,  You might ask yourself  what you are doing to innovate and evolve  your own work.   Are you bringing something to  the table that sets you apart from  the 80–90% of the other photographers?   Are you? Just Because A YouTubers seems happy and Successful in their videos, He or she is most likely, as normal and stressed like you In Real life Imagine the Worst : now take yourself And multiply that by everyone and everything around you. expect them to fail too. that new $2000 camera breaks down. the client that cancels at the last second.  your spouse of 25 years just splits.   the doctor called and needs to see you right away. the landlord wants to double the rent on your studio. Let us be real. All of us who have an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds camera body have nearly always secretly wished to get that coveted “Full Frame look”. Whatever that means. I know it is a little hard to explain and put into words, but the images produced by a full-frame sensor seem so perfect and elegant that we all fall for it. “If only we could afford that beefier sensor, we could have created so much more and better quality art,” we think to ourselves. But what if I tell you it really doesn’t matter. No, this is NOT one of those posts where I tell you not to care about the camera and the lens you have at your disposal and to just go about it and crusade your way through by using your sheer competence and artistic vision.
