Después de varias décadas de lucha por parte de colectivos, organizaciones y activistas feministas para conseguir la despenalización del aborto en México como un derecho de la mujer a decidir sobre su cuerpo , el 26 de abril del año 2007 en Ciudad de México, finalmente fue aprobado el Decreto por el cual se reforma el código penal para el Distrito Federal y se adiciona en la Ley de Salud para el Distrito Federal, la libertad de las mujeres para realizar la interrupción segura y legal del embarazo durante las primeras 12 semanas de gestación
