"Why are you gay?" (Extended Version)
"Why Are You Gay?", is a memorable quote, recognized the world over, from a debate on homosexuality aired by the Ugandan TV channel NBS TV in 2012. When Ugandan TV journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala’s asked Julinan Pepe Onziema, a Ugandan LGBTIQ rights and human rights activist, this question, not only did it spawn humorous memes due to its ludicrous and blunt nature, but it also spoke to how the wider African community views the LGBTIQ, with a mixture of disdain, curiosity and confusion. On this episode 10 years later, Melanie has a conversation with Julian in part to address this question and other related issues of LGBTIQ in Uganda and Africa. Both delved into some of the controversial topics like transgenders in sports, being queer & gay a Western import in Africa and LGBTIQ lobby in Africa & if they are recruiting in Uganda.
