How do we motivate kids to be high achievers? What qualities do teens wish they saw more of in their own educations? How do you know when your kid has a great teacher? How does school impact a teen's anxiety? On the More Than Just a School podcast we investigate the answers to these questions and more. When MTJAS host Karen Lock Kolp's kids needed something different in their education, she and her husband Benjamin Kolp (MTJAS producer) found Bay State Learning Center, a nurturing community of creative, self-directed learners. Their teen sons started there - and LOVED it. Karen and Ben immediately noticed amazing changes in the boys! But when they tried to tell friends, relatives, people who care about their sons, why this new school was different...they couldn't. They didn't have the words. This podcast changes all that. Come along on this quest to find out what works in secondary education...and what doesn't...and why.
Getting Teens to Talk to Grown-ups: a Conversation with Blake Boles | Podcast Episode 5
In this episode, we talk with educator Blake Boles on what makes an adolescent tick. What's going on in a teenager's mind, and how can we connect with our kids? Blake is someone who should know. After studying teenage unschoolers – kids who chose their own path in their educations – in college, he's worked with them in unique and interesting capacities. Blake's been a camp counselor; he travels with young adults to other countries; he's authored books on getting into college without going to high school, "doing" college without going to college, and becoming a self-directed learner. And today's conversation will help you connect with your adolescent child. (I know this, because it helped me : ) Show notes, including the tons of links that come up in our conversation and the link so that you can donate to the people who make More Than Just a School possible, are at baystatelearning.org/005 Hope you enjoy this conversation!

What motivates kids to learn? Talking with BSLC Director George Popham | Podcast Episode 4
How do we motivate kids to be high achievers? The answer may be different than you think. In this conversation MTJAS podcast host Karen speaks with the director of a learning center for adolescents, George Popham of Bay State Learning Center (the center which Karen's sons attend.) George digs into the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, how achievement will come – but only after a teen feels engaged – and what that really looks like in a school setting. Hope you enjoy today's conversation! One teenager's educational must-have: A conversation with BSLC student Max K. | Podcast Episode 3
Today we hear from Max, a teenager who plays kickass guitar, is totally into physics and science, and is a great cook to boot. (I know this because he is also my son.) Max left school in second grade, because the academic pressure caused PTSD-like symptoms in him. Now as a high-school-age kid, he describes his favorite quality about the education he's receiving at Baystate Learning Center, the one quality he believes a teen needs to thrive in school. Listen in to discover what that quality is, why it's so important, and how to get it for your teens (who likely wish they saw it more often in their own lives).
