Love the variety of voices and angles on education covered here. I also appreciate hearing young people get more comfortable asking hard questions and using this platform to connect with the masses.

The ways in which the student perspectives shed light on the NYC school system’s inequities are honest and thorough. We get a fuller picture of the personal effects of city- or schoolwide policies in the lives of different students. The combined audio experience of music, narration and interview clips is also edited beautifully.

The story about the Jaguars put the issue of integration, privilege, and team spirit front and center. What is the strategy for coaches who have club players, working students, and those with limited sports time? Can they build a team that represents each of the four school? Perhaps the Jaguars may benefit from a specific time to talk and explore goals and methods? Can parents from each school be more involved by organizing a team outing or a team breakfast? I’m so bad at listening to podcasts but I’ve become addicted to this one by Taylor! The interviews with the NYC high school students are so fun - these kids are so bright and inspiring. It’s heartbreaking to hear that NYC’s public school system is THE MOST segregated one in the country. Taylor’s lessons on the history and policy of integrations really help motivate and spur me as a listener to want to take some action. My only regret is not discovering it sooner. I highly recommend checking out this podcast, even if you’re bad at podcasts like me!!!!!

I’m late to the game in listening to this podcast but I love hearing student voices talking about the problems in NYC schools. I would love someone to make a similar podcast for Chicago Public School students!

This podcast is so powerful and engaging, telling stories that need to be heard through the perspective of students. I hope they continue to do more!

This podcast confronts hard truths and asks important questions. It weaves together individual stories — many from students, who are all too often left out of this conversation that is really about them more than anyone — and context and facts. It's well-produced, well-told, and just really good overall. So glad I (belatedly) heard about it via American Radioworks' Educate podcast, and I look forward to catching up with all the episodes.

I love this podcast! It's critical to know the lived experience of the students in the schools, who are the most effected by NYC's education policies, and this podcast does that so thoroughly, and so well

The voices of these kids are so inspiring and remind us that change is possible if we really go for it. I really hope these stories put pressure on the school system to become more equal.

I am writing this review because I want to know the background of Mr. McGraw's nickname from his students "Curls for the Girls." But real talk, I have been telling Taylor he was going to be famous since we were 18, but Taylor isn't doing this to get famous. He his making this podcast because he genuinely cares about giving a voice to youth and bringing attention to issues that have long been put to the side. And every time I listen to an episode this is confirmed. I have never known Taylor to do anything 1/2 way and he hasn't started now. Every podcast I listen to has me inspired to go and tell everyone I know that they need to me listening to this podcast...and I know a lot of people ;) Anyway, what I am getting out is that this podcast is important and it is clear that Taylor and his team are working tirelessly to get truth out there. Do yourself a favor and listen! It'll make you smarter and cooler (well, at least the opinion of this Boston school teacher with a southern accent). P.s. I hope it is clear that Taylor didn't edit this review...waiting for his email with notes.

This is an incredibly important podcast, especially for those who work in education. As a special education teacher, I have loved listening to this on the way to work. School segregation needs to be talked about, period. This podcast is a great avenue for that conversation to take. Please, please listen.

great podcast- very engaging storytelling about an extremely important issue

The Bell takes a unique approach to tackling issues of race and segregation by coupling respected research with students' perspectives. The latter is, unfortunately, a view often ignored by policy makers, so The Bell's platform is an important voice that needs to be added to the city and national conversation.

That Taylor McGraw... seems to be a media genius. More people should elevate student voices. McGraw's work is probably applicable in other communities. Maybe next season he should do some cross country work :-)

Thank you for creating such an important and well-researched podcast on this issue, especially through student voice. I'm a white middle school teacher at a Brooklyn charter school, and the topics discussed and explored on The Bell align to discussions I have often with my colleagues and administration, as well as with my students as often as I can. I'm wondering, since you are a white former teacher at a "no excuses" charter - what's your perspective on the treatment of students at these schools? Why has the model of intense strictness been deemed necessary for optimal education of black and brown students? I struggle with the intensity of the rules in our school and whether they are a result of internalized racism against these students. I've noticed that, at my school in particular, a sizable percentage of students continuously struggle to meet school expectations, resulting in send outs, suspensions, and subsequently, missed learning time. These students have expressed their frustration with our schools' sometimes unfounded strictness, and many actually perform better when given some agency. I would love if you explored this idea in a future episode.

The Bell examines a pervasive social issue historically and from a fresh modern perspective---that of racial segregation in public schools. Its youthful production is smart, professional, and entertaining. This is a most worthwhile podcast.

I didn't realize what I was missing in my understand of education policy until I listened to this podcast. Great way to elevate youth voices that are rarely heard in either policy debates or podcasts.

Can't wait for more from this series. As a teacher, I found the student perspective very interesting.
