Summary:
“Have you ever been to a buffet where you literally try everything?”
Sometimes the best way to find your new favorite things is to just sample a lot of different things until you find the things that you enjoy the most. As with a buffet…or even dating, you just “grab something” you think you might like and “give it a taste”. If you like it, you keep going back for more. And if it’s not your thing, you simply continue the process of sampling and tasting other things until you find something you truly enjoy.
Founded by Markus Staiger in Donzdorf, Germany way back in 1987, NUCLEAR BLAST has signed a myriad of metal artists over the years from across the spectrum of sub genres, ranging from hardcore and symphonic metal to industrial metal, thrash metal, and beyond, including some top tier legacy thrash bands from the 1980’s that enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 2000’s (fun fact: Slayer’s final studio album, Repentless, is the highest charting NUCLEAR BLAST release in the United States, making it to Number 4 on the Billboard 200.)
In the context of this particular episode, we are referring to our recent sampling of the artist roster from NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS, and much like with dating and buffets, there were some bands we enjoyed more than others, some that were right up our alley and REALLY hit the spot, and some that just weren’t our cup of tea (so to speak), but rest assured that everything we sampled was most definitely interesting and we learned a few things along the way.
Prepare for the most philosophical voicemail about metal music that we’ve ever received, realize that when it comes to power outages and paranormal activity that “I just wanna make sure that they know that I know that they know” and remember that “sometimes, wet’s not bad” when you JOIN US on our sampling expedition of the NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS artist roster.

“No sink or nothing, right? You’re just gonna go free ball it…”
1989 was the very first year EVER that The Recording Academy recognized hard rock and metal music with the “Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental”. And other than the completely insulting “slap in the face” by The Recording Academy to Metallica (think Will Smith & Chris Rock, but even more childish, petty, and completely unnecessary), there were no other Big Four albums or happenings in 1989.
(SIDEBAR: Y’know, maybe it’s just speculation, conspiracy theory, or just good old-fashioned karma in action, but the way Metallica “lost” that Grammy, it’s like they were literally “deleted from the mix” of nominees, so to speak. Not unlike a certain bass player from a certain mix on a certain album. Moving on…)
“Just gonna raw dog it…”
As we are all aware, metal (especially thrash) is far more than just The Big Four, and 1989 was actually quite an excellent year for metal. As thrash was nearing the zenith of its popularity, Wrathchild America’s debut album, Climbin’ The Walls, hit the record store shelves, Exodus, Testament, and Sepultura each released legendary 3rd albums, and Nuclear Assault released the first, the best, and arguably one of the most revolutionary lyric videos in the history of music for Critical Mass, featuring a one-eyed smiley face saying, “Follow me!” and a “Required Nasty Bit”, courtesy of Jessica Hahn.
“What is YOUR favorite album of 1989?”

Death.
The word alone possesses the same tangible finality and permanence as the act itself. Death marks the end of one’s physical life & existence in this world and can come as a tragic, sudden, and untimely end, or as the sometimes “welcome” final resolution of life following a long, protracted period of illness and suffering.
“We got to live on the same earth at the same time as all these dudes…”
Regardless of how it presents, death impacts every single human on earth. Whether it’s the death of a loved one or our own mortality, it’s the one thing we as humans all share. And no matter what we do or how we live out our lives, eventually we will ALL be (as Lemmy so poetically put it) “killed by death” …and nobody has any idea “when” or “how” it will arrive.
“Do you know how many Junes they lived through?”
Over the course of our lifetime, we all bid farewell to the artists which have helped shape us as people, providing us with what would become the soundtrack to our lives. Many of our favorite artists passed away before we even became familiar with their work, and many have passed away so recently that we are still processing their loss from the perspective of our own lives and the impact that their lives and their art have had on us.
“All you gotta do if you miss them is press play…”
Having said that, we are not here to bemoan the losses we’ve experienced in the metal community so much as we are here to ask you to JOIN US as we CELEBRATE the legacy of those we have lost who have blessed our lives so richly with the timeless art they created that will forever transcend death.

“I mean it’s June, so…”
Released September 29, 1992, CORE, the debut album from San Diego, California’s own STONE TEMPLE PILOTS (or STP for short) is one of those albums that doesn’t really fit into the “grunge” category, nor does it fit into the traditional “heavy metal” box either. It’s certainly not grunge but is definitely “more metal than Pearl Jam”, and while there may be some subtle similarities here and there, they are as different as apples and apple sauce.
“It’s June, man. Knock yourself out…”
Of the STP discography, CORE is certainly their heaviest and most metal sounding album, offering a refreshing change to the musical landscape of the early 90’s with an alternative brand of metal filled with enough grunt and power to appeal to metal heads while simultaneously providing enough melody & hook to achieve the widespread popularity and mainstream crossover success that would lead to its 8x platinum sales status.
Produced by Brendan O’Brien, a legendary name in the alternative metal scene during the 1990’s, CORE is “the heavier side of the ‘grunge’ thing”. You might say that STP’s CORE was “the next wave of metal that wasn’t Pantera…or thrash”.
“We’ve only got 2 more weeks of June though…after June, you can’t do it.”
Understand that “if you’re into naked Sundays you can look at everybody’s wicked garden” and enjoy a nice “piece of pie” in the process. And if you’re still trying to do the math to figure out what a trillionaire is, just remember that “a billion is a thousand million…a trillion is a thousand billion…” and when you have that much cash laying around, “it’s gonna be like Caligula…” when you JOIN US as we eat the apple all the way down to the seeds of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS’ transformative alternative metal debut, CORE.

The year is 1980. The U.S. National Debt is a paltry $900 Billion, the word “yuppie” appears for the first time in print, the Pac-Man videogame is released in arcades everywhere, Mount St. Helens explodes in Washington state, and Cable News Network (also known as CNN) becomes a thing.
In the world of metal, Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath reinvent themselves with new frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals and release Heaven and Hell, and AC/DC regroup after the tragic loss of Bon Scott and release Back In Black featuring new vocalist Brian Johnson, an album that would go on to sell more than 40 million copies and become one of the biggest selling albums of all time.
Just as time and technology continued marching forward, the hard rock of the 70’s continued its evolution into a new direction with a faster, heavier, and more aggressive sound beginning in 1980 that would become even faster, heavier, and more aggressive throughout the 80’s.

“I wanna hear THAT at my grocery store, when I’m going for the meat section…”
Whether it’s the song we all rise for at sports ball events, the first song on Rush’s “Fly By Night” album (not to mention the first song on Anthrax’s EP of classic rock covers), or the sing-along, encore at the end of a rock show, ANTHEMS represent a clarion call, a rallying cry that unites fans in unspeakable joy, unity, and celebration. It’s almost always the song that EVERYONE knows (even your grandmother) and is very much NOT a deep cut.
“AC/DC’s kind of an anthem band…they have at least one on every album…”
In fact, ANTHEMS are those kinds of songs where, if you hear one in a public place: at a bar, a restaurant, the grocery store, or a friend’s party, you’re not going to NOT like it. Sure, it’s probably the most well-known, popular, played into the ground, mainstream “hit” that EVERYONE (again, probably even your grandmother) is familiar with, but no matter what song it is or where you might hear it, ANTHEMS are guaranteed to get you fired up, lift your spirit, and bring a smile to your face.

“Today is all about 7’s…”
We can’t believe it…it’s officially been SEVEN years since we began our podcasting journey, and as of this episode, we are celebrating SEVEN years of heavy metal podcasting excellence! And in the spirit of heavy metal greatness, what better way to celebrate and commemorate the completion of our SEVENTH year than a tribute to the best thing MTV ever did for metal heads that started way back in the late 80’s: HEADBANGERS BALL!!!
“It was the novelty, because that was the only place where you could get it…”
Premiering on Saturday April 18, 1987, MTV began what would become a weekly Saturday night tradition and/or ritual for metal heads with HEADBANGERS BALL, the one section of MTV that belonged to the metal community…it was OUR show, OUR music, and OUR videos, made by metal heads for metal heads (ironically, not unlike this podcast).
“SEVEN!”
Granted, there were often a lot of glam and hair metal videos mixed in, but there were always a plethora of obscure thrash, power metal, and other assorted heavy metal videos on there that you absolutely could not see anywhere else on MTV except for when you tuned in to “The Ball” (NOTE: this is where the crochety “back in my day” sentiment comes into play because, as everyone with access to the internet knows, in the late 80’s, rock radio sure as hell wasn’t doing much to promote metal artists, and we certainly didn’t have Spotify or YouTube at our disposal. “The Ball” was all we had…mark the time.).
“They weren’t Trans then, dude…they were 100% dudes and they were the Savatage Brothers…”
Break out your finest relaxers and get ready for a celebratory stroll down memory lane, and understand that since we’re discussing music videos, you’re gonna need all the sensory enhancement you can muster to thoroughly maximize your enjoyment of this episode.
Find out who’s “lips are always out”, understand why calling a woman “handsome” is a dangerous move even with the proper context, see how many applicable references to “SEVEN!” you can find in this episode, and don’t deny the power of “The Dinklage” when you JOIN US as we celebrate our 7th birthday in nostalgic style with HEADBANGERS BALL.

“Would it be fair to say that horror metal and death metal are kinda…symbiotic?”
Released May 25, 1987, SCREAM BLOODY GORE, the debut album from Florida death metal pioneers DEATH, marks a dark and transformative turning point from thrash metal into something else…something with “thrash overtones” that “sounds like thrash” but also doesn’t. While it seemed to be the next logical evolutionary step for extreme metal, we weren’t exactly sure what it was. It was still thrashy, yet there was a much darker presence to it than the thrash to which we were accustomed.
“They don’t have the cookie monster vocals, which is kinda nice…”
As it turns out, when you mix in the violent themes of horror movies like ‘Evil Dead’ with the sonic intensity of thrash metal, you end up with death metal, the genre which Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH helped establish in the mid 1980’s, putting Florida on the map as the death metal capital of the world.
“They just have a sound…if you take the vocals out, you can tell it’s Death.”
Discover how immersion reading can make Dr. Seuss and Lord of the Rings even more compelling, always remember where you should “NEVER put alcohol…”, and find out which song on this album was “renamed” (thanks to the PMRC) when you JOIN US (with special guest “Xander Bonerman”) as we explore the dark depths of the debut album from the band that revolutionized extreme metal by launching a brand new subgenre of horror infused thrash with DEATH and SCREAM BLOODY GORE.

“I wonder how many modern bands still do it?”
Maybe the song is named after the band and referenced in the chorus. Maybe the song is named after the band but there’s no reference to the band’s name anywhere in the lyrics. Or maybe it’s a song with a completely different title than the band name BUT the band name IS mentioned somewhere in the lyrics.
“They mostly do it during their early years…”
Whatever the case may be, A METAL BAND’S TITLE TRACK ultimately becomes the cornerstone of a band’s sound and their overall mission statement and objective (especially when they’re young and just starting out).
“Taylor Swift doesn’t have a song called ‘Taylor Swift’…and The Beatles don’t have a song called ‘The Beatles’…”
Whether it’s about building a mood, declaring some philosophical ethos, or making a proud, self-referential namecheck for fans to latch on and lock in to, A METAL BAND’S TITLE TRACK sets the tone and lets the listener know what can be expected whenever they hear it.
Discover what it means to be a “hill jack”, understand why the good people of “Missourah” enjoy sipping on “Kentuckah” bourbon while floating down the “Mississippah” river, and find out how “Three Dudes…” are about to fundamentally transform metal award shows forever when you JOIN US as we investigate the importance of A METAL BAND’S TITLE TRACK.

“It took me like a hard 16 seconds…but I got it down…I swallowed all of it…”
Released April 10, 2026, DEAD TO RIGHTS, the 14th studio album in 40+ years from the mighty METAL CHURCH, features a new line up and a return to the power metal infused thrash style that made them a force to be reckoned with back in the 80’s, during the heyday of the (then relatively new) thrash scene.
“I was proud of myself…that I finished that much…in so little time…”
Featuring David Ellefson (formerly of Megadeth) on bass, Ken Mary (currently of Flotsam and Jetsam) on drums, and brand-new vocalist Brian Allen, DEAD TO RIGHTS contains all of the best elements of “The Dark” and “Blessing In Disguise” with the added blessing of modern production quality. This album is chock full of great riffs and catchy hooks that maintains the classic “flavor of Metal Church” with some upgraded, present-day refinements.
“He’s got great gear…he’s got really nice gear…I kinda wanna play with his gear…”
Find out why “Splitting The G” is an essential St. Patrick’s Day event for every holiday, get yourself a tiny sample of the brand-new Venom album, “Into Oblivion” (featuring Cronos), and find out why “the Metallica of the WCW” likes to enjoy “the Evil Bean with the Mean Gene” when you JOIN US as we embrace the power and the fury of METAL CHURCH with their latest offering, DEAD TO RIGHTS.
