The world tells us that people who are productive, self-sufficient, powerful, have the best resume, and are liked by all are the "blessed ones." But in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12), Jesus turns this way of thinking on its head. The shocking reality is that God's favor and blessing comes to failures! Weakness is the way. This message, delivered by Pastor and teacher Nick Braunschneider, introduced a new teaching series based on the Sermon on the Mount, called "Freedom from Religion." The primary goal of this series is to confront the idea that morality saves us. Jesus Christ, and His work on our behalf, are the sole grounds of our hope. As Jesus prepares to deliver His most famous teaching, we'll see that His coming, and His message, signal a fundamental change in how God and His people relate, from the Old Covenant (obey and you will be blessed) to the New Covenant (you are blessed because Jesus has secured God's blessing for you).

Throughout Advent, we have been anxiously waiting for the arrival of Jesus. Now, He has finally come! And on Epiphany Sunday, we are reminded that He is a King, the King of kings. But King Jesus is unlike any king we have ever known. He is the One who has come "not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28). The Good News is that Jesus the King has come to set us free from everything that keeps us from abundant life with Him! And for this, Jesus is worthy of our worship and our devotion.
