Episode 39 - My first years in America and hope for the future with Jenny Li
Continuing our discussion with Jenny Li (Yan’s mom) with Part 2. Jenny describes the tough lessons she learned during her first years in America as a new young immigrant in the late 80s. She shares how luck and a very good friend helped her get a student visa, how she got her first job even though she didn't speak any English, the struggles that showed her how resilient she was, and the kindness of people along her journey that allowed her to shape her career. Despite the difficulties Jenny has experienced, she always had hope. That hope guided her to maintain the resilience soul she possesses to this day. #HERstory If you have any questions, please contact us below Checkout our website: https://www.lostandrefound.com/ Follow Lost & Refound on Instagram: @lost.and.refound  Follow Yan on Instagram: @fabmomlife  Follow Evonne on Instagram: @smile.wave.repeat  Email us: [email protected] --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lostandrefound/support

Episode 38 - Growing up in China during the Culture Revolution with Jenny Li
Today’s episode marks the first episode for Asian American History Month. Given the political climate in the US right now, and that this is the month to celebrate both Evonne and my heritage, we wanted to dedicate this entire month to celebrate inspirational Asian women’s stories. We are kicking off the first episode with none other than my (Yan’s) mom. Like many kids I grew up stuck in my own head, caring only for myself, and have never truly asked my mom to tell me her childhood stories. Sure I know of some things she has mentioned here and there, but never the story in its entirety. That’s why I am sooooo honored to finally have my mom on the podcast. It took me months to convince her, but I know it’s hard on her to dredge up all of those traumatizing memories. I am thankful to finally have heard her childhood story, and have a whole new appreciation for the truly inspiration, strong, compassionate, graceful, and generous women she is. If I can be half as strong as her, can make half of the sacrifices she has made for her family, I would be very proud of myself. Thank you mom for coming on! I love you so much! Episode 36 - Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness with Ylan Hunt
Sickle cell Anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder, it is a genetic condition that is inherited when a child receives two sickle cell genes. It’s reported that about 100K people in the United States have sickle cell, with 90% of that population from African descent. However this disease also affects people of Hispanic, South Asian, Southern European, and Middle Eastern ancestry. Unfortunately there is very little information about this painful and life threatening disease that majority affects minorities. We are so honored to have Ylan Hunt join us today to spread awareness for this disease. She has suffered from this her entire life, and we get a first hand account of what is like to live with this condition, how discrimination and stereotyping prevent patients from getting proper treatment, and how a holistic treatment approach might better manage symptoms. Episode 33 - Learning self awareness through the lens of Vedanta with Mitadru Dey
Growing up in India, Mitadru Dey was never interested in spirituality. It was only when he came to the United States, he started noticing how unhappy people seemed in their day to day lives. In his own pursuit of happiness, as well as constantly looking for ways to be more productive in his day to day life, he found the practice of Vedanta. Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient spiritual philosophies and one of its broadest, based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. It is the philosophical foundation of Hinduism; but while Hinduism includes aspects of Indian culture, Vedanta is universal in its application and is equally relevant to all countries, all cultures, and all religious backgrounds. Vedanta affirms: The oneness of existence, The divinity of the soul, and The harmony of all religions. (Taken from https://vedanta.org/what-is-vedanta/) Vedanta helps you attain: Peace of Mind Efficiency and Concentration Clarity in Thinking Stress-free Relationships Realization of Life’s Purpose (Taken from https://www.vedantausa.org/) To get in touch with Mitadru: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mitadru-dey To learn more about Vedanta: https://www.vedantausa.org/ https://vedanta.org/ Thanks again for listening to this episode. Episode 31 - My journey with depression with Yan
Depression is a lonely illness, even when you are surrounded by ones who love you. Depression is a self imposed isolation. It’s like you are screaming in your mind, but your lips have been sewn together with invisible threads. Depression is living in darkness even when you are surrounded by light. I have dealt with depression most of my life. I have high functioning depression, which means I can still do everything that’s needed with a smile on my face, but inside I am slowly dying. In this episode Evonne and I discuss my life long journey with depression. This was a difficult episode to record, filled with real emotions. I apologize if at times I sound like I’m slurring my words (I was!). It’s hard to open up about depression, but I am doing so for two reasons. One, by speaking up, I am taking my power back. And two, I am sharing my experience  in hopes of inspiring others to speak out about their own depression, in doing so, also taking back their power. I am forever grateful for having the support of my husband, who is always gentle yet firm in dealing with my depression, but always do so with loving understanding. As well as for my cohost Evonne, and all my friends who reached out to me, even if I didn't want to share in detail, your support meant the world to me and was an integral part of my recovery journey.  Thanks again for listening to this episode.
