Monica Packer is a recovering perfectionist and is sharing what she has discovered along her journey. Her big question is What if you’re stuck but not lazy, what if you’re actually a perfectionist? In this episode Monica and Sara will talk about perfectionism, and not just the stereotypical overachiever, but rather the spectrum, one that can be all-controlling and make you feel like you aren’t making progress, then blame yourself, and so the cycle begins.
How many of us feel lost? Paralyzed by fear? Burdened by the obsession to be perfect but never seeming to measure up? Caught up in bad cycles that enable you to stay stagnate? Unsure of your own gifts?
Many women feel lost in the cycles of perfectionism and procrastination. Sara is the biggest champion of getting women to overcome fear and grab life by the horns. And her guest today has the same desire to propel women into feeling good about what they do and how they live. Monica created her About Progress community and podcast that guides women to grow into living with purpose and connecting to their greater potential.
So, choose Progress over Perfection and Remember: Small wins build over time. And don’t be too hard on yourself.

Sara, as many of you know, is an avid mountain climber and also leads groups down the Grand Canyon. Many of the participants use this excursion as a passage through a transitional period in their life, a way to conquer their fears and grasp onto the next thing that’s calling to them, or work on solving an issue in their lives. Much of the time, they are tackling a problem, large or small and with Sara’s coaching and leadership, they go through the experience and come out of the canyon as confident and somewhat changed people ready to grasp every bit of life to make theirs’ the best possible.
In this solo episode, Sara uses the canyon as a metaphor for all of us in the midst of solving our problems. There are words of wisdom in this and she begins by suggesting ways to begin- imagine you are standing on the rim of the Canyon, looking down into what she calls a “ditch”. What is the problem you are working on- what challenge is in front of you? And from there, Sara leads us through how tackling the canyon is similar to tackling our obstacles or issues.
She reminds us of Sara’s 3 P’s: Passion, Purpose and Playing. Don’t ever forget to play. And about the acronym DUDE, which is Canyon lingo that you can use in non-mountain thought processes.
And Sara gives us an important reminder: To be flexible and resilient and ready to Pivot at any given moment .. in the canyon and in life. Join Sara in this virtual Climb to Clarity.

Carson Kranz has been involved with sports from the early age of four. He was a swimmer, he stuck with it, and today he is Captain of the USC Mens Water Polo team. Through his parents’ divorce, moving homes, Covid, and other events in his life, Carson was always encouraged by his mom to keep at his passion, and Carson sees how his involvement in sports and his daily practices truly helped him through some of his tough times.
He appreciated his coaches, his sense of community, and his own inner drive and diligence to keep him from sinking under emotional pressures.
This talk between mother and son is a great lesson in a parent’s role in support of deep commitments by their children, and letting them find their passion. We also hear from Carson about his discipline for himself but also his utmost caring for his teammates. It is a testament to him that he has the understanding and ability to take inherent Sports codes and translate them to LIFE.
This will inspire parents, sports kids, and non-sports kids of the power of passion and the resourcefulness within each of us. We even find out about the tools of visualization and breathing that can help us all!

It’s the New Year and you may have created a new Bucket List or reviewed your old one- or not made one. Sara talks about what a bucket list is to her and how some of her items are in Pen vs. Pencil.
Bucket Lists can include places you want to visit, Professional and/or Personal goals, but one of the most important things to do is to declutter your space and make room for new things and goals. Out with some of the old that you may not even notice anymore. Look around, don’t overlook what’s in front of you, and see what you may truly be done with.
Carving out space for the newly deserved goals is a priority for Sara. What is also a priority is staying aware of what you are called to- that sub-conscious spark. This can lead you to opportunities you may not even imagine …. yet.
Here’s to making space for everything on your bucket list.

Sara and Britt talk about the importance of honoring micro steps and to not set a goal, rather set systems. Make life as easy as possible. Don’t make things so difficult. Set it, forget it.
And celebrate all your micro steps, that can ultimately get to macro steps.
Micro-yessing gets u to macro actions.
They also talk about as you expand, you will feel the loss of certain people that fall by the wayside. You don’t have to forgive or blame… you can be in net neutral… it’s a beautiful place to be.
3 steps to Get Unstuck:
Don’t ask why… you can ask that later.
Name 3 micro yesses.
Pick one. Do it. Celebrate it.
Here’s to celebrating your first small steps in the New Year and celebrating them!

A former psychotherapist in the field of psychopathology, Sandra currently is an accomplished community educator on the intersections of mental illness, personality disorders, violence, and recidivism. Sandra is recognized for her pioneering work in women’s issues related to relational harm from dangerous and pathological partners. Sandra and Sara talk about trauma, survival, and the personality profile of the “attackers”.
Sandra does not believe that the origin of sociopathic and psychopathic behavior stems from childhood. She does see a line of lack of or low empathy in the perpetrators. They also talk about how it is not always easy to stay ahead of a psychopath’s mind. As Sandra says “They are sicker than we are smart”.
This is an episode that shines light on the survivor and what is really needed for recovery, but also about the research of what makes someone thrive in hurting and fooling others.

Bushido means “way of the warrior.” It is also known as “The Samurai Code of Chivalry.” The laws of Bushido focus on honor, courage, skill, and loyalty above everything. The 8 virtues include: Justice, courage, mercy, respect, honesty, honor, loyalty and self-control.
Sara talks about being a sports mom, sitting in the stands at her sons’ individual water polo and basketball games and reflects that her behavior isn’t always admirable. She also uses the symbolism of how you act in the stands to how you act in life. A few of the parents started talking about Bushido and Sara wanted to share it with her listeners as a good code of living whether in the stands at sports or in the stands of life.
What you put out into the universe is what you get back, so it is wise to be very intentional and conscious about our behaviors. Yelling not such nice things in the sports arena, is not any more acceptable than doing so in life. Sara is working on the last code of losing control in any situation. Which virtues do you need to work on?
Listen in and let Sara know your thoughts on this solo chat!
