Miller has a new body! It is less noirish and more murderbottish than his last one, but it helps Holden get close to the mysterious anomaly they're searching for. Elvi figures out why Holden is immune to the proto-algic eyeball invader: his cancer meds. Turns out getting thoroughly irradiated is not without some long-term benefit. Meanwhile the Rocinante's rescue mission of the Barbapiccola is derailed by a nihilistic attack by the inner space militia. As Elvi races to find a solution to the eye algae, Alex arms Basia and sends him to attack Havelock's space militia. Things are not going well on Ilus. Between the planetwide cataclysm, the unending threat of the poisonous death slugs, the disabling of all fusion reactions, and the alien organism infecting everybody's eyeballs, the conflict among the colonists doesn't seem so bad. Havelock realizes that Naomi, now his captive, is cooler than anybody on his side. He doesn't have much time to ponder this, because the planet explodes. Back on the Rocinante, the crew gets an an unfortunate downgrade when Basia joins as a prisoner, and Naomi is captured by Havelock (of all people!). Holden tries to stave off the inevitable bloody resolution of the conflict on the planet. Violence escalates on Ilus/New Terra as an attempted ambush is ambushed.
