An idealistic young woman meets the man she hopes to marry at the beginning of World War Two, but when he is sent to Alaska to work on the Alaskan Railroad and she enters pilot training at the only all-female airbase in American history, their  relationship is tested to an extraordinary - and heartbreaking - degree.
