In this episode, I am joined by Jess Corrigan and we dismantle the meaning of tokenism and performative activism. The phrase “Diversity and Inclusivity” gets tossed around the fashion industry just as much as “sustainability” and as a result we, as consumers, look for these trigger words to put our minds at ease and know we are shopping consciously without actually checking to see if the brand actually is diverse and inclusive. Jess knows how to spot when a brand is being authentic and when a brand is performative, which can sometimes be a very fine, wiggly and inconsistent line. It is okay to be sucked into some brands’ persuasive and “politically correct” language but this discussion is giving tips on how to spot tokenism and which brands deserve credit for being diverse in the right way.
