This one was tough to record. It may be tough to listen to and that's definitely ok. Depression, amongst many other mental health issues affect A LOT of people, Dad's and men quite often suffer in silence. I have been doing the same thing, but I want to be a part of the change. This one was hard to record but this week I dive into my own battles with depression. Try to shine some light on what it can look like (tiredness, emotional withdrawal, intrusive thoughts etc), what people don't talk about enough (the guilt, not knowing how to respond to someone reaching out), and some things that I find help get me through and give me some momentum when times are hard.I hope this view into what depression can look and sound like while it's happening can help you or someone you know manage through your own battle, or help you as a support for someone. If you are struggling please reach out and seek help. One thing I have discovered is that being a dad is a constant learning curve. While having covid in the house now for the 3rd week, I realised how much less worried about it I am compared to if we had it even last year. That got me thinking about all the things that seemed like huge issues or changes (and they were at that moment) but I now look back at and think this is pretty normal. And after talking with my own circle of dads, is pretty common. So today I’m going to share some of the things I have experienced with you, and while it won’t take them away. Might make it easier to cope with and give you the bit of peace of mind that you aren’t alone. First one is being tired. Sleep Is broken, babies sleep will change, always trying to do activities -Body gets used to it-Setting up sleep schedule-Melatonin Not feeling connected to the baby -More likely with second child-Face recognition -Give it time, keep trying to find moments to connect. Playing games, reading books just having a cuddle. Sex and intimacy bodies change, mentality changes. -Talk about it. Set times aside to honestly talk about what each needs -Be willing to think outside the box-Try new things -Debrief-If nothing changes after all this seek support. Finding out new things you and your partner don’t align with -ie: Discipline, roles and responsibilities, money management-Honest communication is key-Find some mutual ground-Be willing to sacrifice lower priority things
