For this week’s episode, the ladies took a deep dive into what it means to be a man in today’s society with Teray Smith and Aulden Smith. We arguably live in a patriarchal and hierarchical society. As a result, some people think that men cannot be victims. After all a society which operates this way should be favourable to men. But this is not the case.
Al and Teray shared their experiences in growing up in today’s world, what shaped and molded them into manhood, the influence black culture had on their perspectives, the influence of role model along with other pressing issues modern day men face.
It’s a myth that men do not face obstacles. As Julie Zeilinger explains: ‘Even with ever-present privilege, men face their own set of destructive barriers that restrict what it means to be a man and how a man can express himself. This is especially true for men who are also members of marginalized groups.’Do men have the space to be vulnerable? How can women approach men from a place of compassion and offer support / be a support system? – do men have a strong support system? What is something men wish women knew about them?
