Love this show but Tom Scott just listed the 4 states with the longest coastline and Michigan wasn’t one of them? Help me understand 🧐

I’ve listened to every single episode, some multiple times. I was downright obsessed. Something happened with the quality of the questions when 2025 came around - they used to consistently scratch that nerdy itch, and suddenly they started falling flat. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the budget was cut at the start of 2025. When I recommend this podcast I tell people to listen to an episode from 2024. That being said… I still listen to every episode and it’s still a great podcast. It may not hit as hard as it used to but it’s still a great time.

This is such a pleasing podcast, although it does make my brain hurt but in a good way. So delighted to hear vtphysics on the program. Enjoy her shorts.

I must believe that Tom is destined to be a game show host. I can’t count how many of his quiz-show type offerings I have enjoyed. Here he brings on clever guests and asks them lateral thinking questions to bend their brains. But it’s not just Tom at the helm. Each guest brings questions of their own, and everyone gets in on the fun. Sometimes the journey is better than the answer itself.

Funny and teaches you new things. Love it.

I feel bad writing because these are wonderful guests and the host is giving it his all, but I kept feeling like as an audience member was being talked down too. We were called about for contributions as being pedantic burdens. I wish there was a different format and I didn’t feel like such an inferior stepping stone to someone else’s paid career. Like listeners were a regrettable afterthought. Might be more that this comes from the Grant Norton conversational style I’m not used to as an American.

Question was something about a prolific entertainer whose city burnt down so he built something to help ease his wife’s concerns, and I’m screaming at my phone, “it’s William Randolph Hearst and the Hearst Castle that can never burn” over and over for 10 minutes getting more and more upset (I get really into game shows)… Nope, it was William Wright who co-created The Sims. I immediately subscribed and binged. Great stuff.

This is an exceptionally engaging listen. I always think about the possible answers. Great way to think while commuting to work.

This podcast has somehow made me smarter and stupider at the same time. The puns are the absolute best/worst and completely groan inducing (in the best way) and the creative thinking skills it has ingrained in me are absolutely noticeable. But really the hosts are Caroline, Ella, and Tom - even if it’s the other Tom’s name on the tin. Oh also they’ve had Alec from Technology Connections as a guest a couple times, which I really appreciated as a TC fan!

LOVE that Huw Morris submitted a question. It truly was. Different question but fun Additional info— The Westin also ironed your dollar bills for a time! Been here since the first episode and I always love when I can get a question from the first clue alone (not often, but is still magical!) Very much enjoy listening to each episode and introducing new people to the podcast :))

I used to have a solid podcast rotation. Then I found this podcast. I’ve listened to the last 130 episodes of lateral without listening to any other podcasts. It has been my go-to everyday. Incredible.

come on….we have to admit this is a bad concept that’s only enjoyable because the guests are cool and entertaining right? it’s a guessing game that doesn’t ask its guests to use their expertise, knowledge, reasoning, or problem solving. instead it asks them to keep guessing wrong until the host gives more and more hints before practically telling them the answer. the fact that tom scott came up with this brain dead concept but made it successful by bringing on charismatic guests with existing fanbases is kinda annoying?

What a gem! I discovered this after Tom Scott was on an episode of SciShow Tangents and am SO GLAD I decided to check it out. It's like this was made specifically for my weird little brain. Just an absolute joy. If you are into curiosity and a good old Wikipedia rabbit hole you will love this show!

One of the best pods out there. So funny, informative, and entertaining. Makes long drives feel short. Wish they brought out the bonus questions every show!

I have learned so many fun knowledge tidbits while listening to this show! I try to play along and get giddy when I can say “I know this so I have to sit this one out” (which has only happened a couple times).

Love the show and trying to play along. My one request is that Tom stops apologizing for bringing up random facts that are some of the most interesting things I’ve ever heard. Can’t recommend enough.

We live in a universe where there is no Tom Scott video any more , but we have a podcast. I love it. The podcast, not the situation.

Tom Scott is great. What I can't take is guests that seem to be proud of being ignorant of anything that happened before they were born. They giggle like it's cute. It's not.

While it’s not really easy to guess solutions as a listener, it can be fun knowing the answers and just listening to everyone have a fun time while stumbling to the answer!

I love this podcast because there is so much fun and laughs all throughout every episode. I’ve listened to all of the episodes and would love to be on the podcast! Thank you for making it weekly!

I’d give this show 6 stars if I could. Fantastic format, great guests, lots of laughs, and plenty of pondering.

Lateral is singularly my favorite podcast! My brain gets a workout and Tom always keeps the show flowing along with his incredible guests! When I actually beat the panel to an answer it makes my week!

This podcast is light hearted, funny, and engaging. With guests that jest and guess with equal enthusiasm, while still allowing us at home to guess (and yell out the answer we have long figured out). The running joke of Tom’s ancient-ness tickles me pink, and, as an American, I for one am all for the translations of British turns of phrase. If for no other reason than to feel good that I guessed correctly. All in all, an outstanding show which is always chipper and challenging in all the right ways! Keep up the great work!

I love this show, and I look forward to Fridays to try to guess along with the contestants! In reference to the latest show, we do have double glazing in the US, but we call it double paned windows. Some older homes may still have single paned, but it is increasingly rare.

Great podcast with just the right amount of humor. If this is the only content from Tom Scott we get for a while, I would still be satisfied. Love this content, keep it up.

I would listen to this podcast every single day if I could! It would be really helpful to have the questions written out in the episode descriptions because Tom usually says the questions very quietly and I can't hear it in the car.

Fantastic podcast to listen to by yourself or with people and the format makes it a treat to play along with. Only downside is that there is no video available beyond some highlights on YouTube. Certainly not a dealbreaker but I would love the option since they are filming it anyway for the highlights.
