For the past decade, I’ve taught English 11, which generally is American Literature, paired with US History. To end each year, the students compose one of two final writings centered around the American dream: either a documented essay with three sources (one of our works and two reliable outside sources, or two works and one outside source). Pick a lens: definition or obstacles. Or an original 3-5 page short story, incorporating a current issue, trend or concern into the plot. Create characters who must encounter, overcome or not overcome the issue.
Needless to say, their responses are revealing, and their knowledge at their age is real. It's all part of this grand American experience they'll soon be joining.
