In this second part of our coverage from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, we continue to explore the pit lane of the Formula Student Spain 2026. This time, we bring you interviews in English with international university teams pushing the boundaries of autonomous and electric racing:
🏎️ Prague Team: Marco, the autonomous group leader, explains their unique and minimalist approach to the Driverless category. Instead of LiDAR, they rely solely on a Full HD mono camera processed by a Mac Mini (CPU only). This efficient setup allows them to detect cones up to 35 meters away and hit impressive top speeds of 27 m/s on the track.🏎️ Aristotle Racing Team (Thessaloniki, Greece): The team details their massive technological leap: implementing a 4-wheel drive powertrain with custom in-house designed motors and a new ECU. They also walk us through their autonomous pipeline, explaining why they are relying on a stereo camera setup this year while keeping LiDAR sensor fusion in the research phase.🏎️ Estonia Team: We dive deep into the challenges of LiDAR range limitations and how it bottlenecks vehicle speed. The team discusses the engineering trade-offs of their three potential solutions for next year: adding a camera for sensor fusion, accumulating point clouds, or purchasing a vertically denser LiDAR—all while competing with a team largely made up of first-year bachelor students.
An episode to discover the effort, talent, and engineering of the international students who will lead the future of mobility!
