Jane Smiley, whose latest novel is "Perestroika in Paris," in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky.
The author of sixteen adult fiction novels, two short story collections, five non-fiction works plus several young adult novels, Jane Smiley is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "A Thousand Acres," and more recently The Last Hundred Years Trilogy. She current teaches creative writing.
"Perestroika in Paris" is a departure from her other works. Clearly an adult novel, it focuses on several animals on the loose in Paris in 2008, including a horse named Perestroika (Paras), based in part on Jane Smiley's own horse of the same name, a dog named Frida (based in part on Jane Smiley's own German short-haired pointer) and an array of other creatures, all of whom communicate with one another, and create a bond with a young orphan named Etienne, who lives with his elderly grandmother near the Eiffel Tower.
As Jane points out in the interview, in an era when we are overwhelmed with angst in politics and during the pandemic, a book that takes us far away can often seem like a necessary relief.

Charles Yu, whose novel Interior Chinatown just won the 2020 National Book Award for fiction, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
Interior Chinatown takes place in a meta-world in which Hollywood's Chinese stereotypes are portrayed by Asian immigrants and second-generation Asian Americans in films and TV shows. The book uses tropes from screenplays as well as prose fiction to illuminate these tropes, switching between narrative, entertainment history, and polemic in a highly original way.
Charles Yu is the author of two previous short-story collections and one novel, has worked as an attorney, and also has worked in the writers' room of several television shows, most notably during the first season of HBO's Westworld.

In the fall of 2008, he directed a production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at Berkeley Rep, and in this interview he discusses his direction of the play, his career and his affinity for the work of August Wilson. The interview originally aired on KPFA on November 14, 2008.

Carl Hiaasen is a novelist best known for writing humorous and satiric crime thrillers set in Florida. His latest novel, Squeeze Me, satirizes life in Palm Beach during the era of the last president, and features a thinly disguised Trump waddling through his digs at Mar a Lago, here called Casa Bellacosa. He is also a regular columnist for The Miami Herald, appearing every Sunday to discuss political and social issues. He is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
In this in-depth interview, he discusses the writing of Squeeze Me and how difficult it has been to create satire during the Trump years, his views on the current Governor of Florida, and the process of writing comic thrillers. Complete 44-minute interview. [2]

Alla Kovgan, director and writer of the film "Cunningham," about the choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
"Cunningham" takes us from the 1940s to early 1970s in the work and career of Merce Cunningham (1919-2009), with many of his dances recreated in 3D. In this discussion, Alla Kovgan talks about the difficulty of translating dance to film, and how this film came to be created.
Variety: "Shot in glorious 3D that makes the technical mode feel indispensable (like in Wim Wenders’ comparable dance documentary “Pina,” sure, but also Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” and even James Cameron’s “Avatar”), Kovgan’s ode to choreography master Merce Cunningham [3] is sensational in every sense of the word."
Currently, "Cunningham" is available streaming on Hulu, and can be rented via Amazon, Apple TV, and other streaming services.

Chris Hedges is the author of several books on politics and dissent. In May, 2015, he gave a speech in Berkeley as a benefit for KPFA, discussing his latest book at the time,Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt. . Afterward, he was joined by host Richard Wolinsky for a Q&A that included questions by the host as well as by the audience. The Q&A is featured on today’s program, and is remarkable for its prescience. Shortly thereafter, Donald Trump announced his candidacy, and not even Chris Hedges could have predicted how quickly America changed.

Ralph Steadman is an illustrator and artist best known for his collaborations with the late Hunter S. Thompson in the two "Fear and Loathing" books. His latest work is a collection of his artwork, "Ralph Steadman: A Life in Ink," published by Chronicle Books. He is interviewed from England by host Richard Wolinsky.
Ralph Steadman got his start using a correspondence course before moving on to art school. After his first book, when he came to America, he was enlisted to work with Hunter S. Thompson and Rolling Stone magazine, and continued to work with Thompson over several years until Thompson's suicide. He's also worked on album jackets, and has illustrated several works, including "Alice in Wonderland," ""Treasure Island and even a collection of Breaking Bad portraits.
He is, of course, also known for his trenchant political cartoons, as above.

Neil Sheehan, who died on January 7, 2021 at the age of 84, was one of the great American journalists. Known for having broken the Pentagon Papers in the New York Times, he was also the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning author of A Bright Shining Lie, a history of the American involvement in Vietnam, as told through the life of Lt. Col. John Paul Vann.
This interview with Neil Sheehan, conducted by host Richard Wolinsky, was conducted on October 12, 2009 while he was on tour for his book A Fiery Peace in a Cold War: Bernard Schriever and the Ultimate Weapon, which focused on the nuclear stalemate between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the history of the Cold War.
While the central theme of the interview is A Fiery Peace in a Cold War, Neil Sheehan also discusses American involvements in Vietnam, both Iraq wars, and Afghanistan, and of course, the Pentagon Papers.

Barry Lopez (1945-2020) in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded November 30, 2000 while on tour for the collection of short stories, Light Action in the Caribbean.
Barry Lopez, who died on December 25, 2020 at the age of 75, was a master of the short form, both fiction and non-fiction. His non-fiction, collected in such books as Arctic Dreams and his last published work, Horizon, and his fiction in collections such as Light Action in the Caribbean and Resistance, focused on exploration, biology, morality, transcendence, biology, politics, philosophy and much more.
In this first of three Cover to Cover/Bookwaves interviews with Barry Lopez, he discusses in detail how he works on short fiction, as well as the politics and politicians of the era. There are points where it sounds as if he's speaking of the events of 2020, and the prescience is uncanny.
While initial reports indicated that Barry Lopez died from prostate cancer, the Washington Post revealed that there was more to it. In September of 2020, his beloved home in the Cascade Moujntains between Bend and Eugene, Oregon was destroyed in the massive fires that ravaged Oregon. Lost were all his original manuscripts, his artwork, and all that he’d collected from his journeys over the years. Shortly thereafter, he began developing cardiac issues that contributed to his death.
This interview was digitized and edited during the last week of December, 2020, and the entire recording has never seen the light of day until now.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky.

Bookwaves
Robert Macfarlane, whose latest book is "Ghostways: Two Journeys in Unquiet Places," written in collaboration with artist Stanley Donwood and writer Dan Richards, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
This short book examines two strange areas in England, Orford Ness, a spit of sand in the southeast of England, not far from Cambridge, which was used as a weapons testing site in the Cold War, and the holloways of Dorset, strange paths beaten over centuries, and often covered over by trees, almost as caves.
In this interview, recorded December 8, 2020, he talks about the book, both places in England, how the pandemic has affected his life, and how climate change is affected by the shutdown.
The author of several books, including "Underland," "Mountains of the Mind" and "The Old Ways," Robert Macfarlane teaches at Cambridge University.
An extended 40-minute version of this interview can be found as a Radio Wolinsky podcast. [2]

This is the fourth in a series of interviews about theatre companies during the year of Covid.
[caption id="attachment_294193" align="alignleft" width="200"] Bill English and Susi Damilano[/caption]
Bill English is the Artistic Director and co-founder (with Susi Damilano) of San Francisco Playhouse, which had to shut down its theater near Union Square, in the Kensington Park Hotel on Post Street, in March while ready for tech rehearsals for their next show.
Since then, the company has had to come up with ways to stay alive -- and as with most companies, turned to streaming, first with a series of interviews about theatre, and then with Zoomlets, short plays heard as readings every Monday. Both interviews and most zoomlets are now available on the SF Playhouse website. [3]
More recently, SF Playhouse has devised three-play virtual seasons, one in the winter (The Jewelry Box with Brian Copeland closes December 25, 2020 and Songs for a New World closes December 31, 2020) and the next, featuring world premieres comes on line in sequence in February, 2021.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky.
Links to on-line and streaming local theater & book events [1]
The Bookwaves/Artwaves Hour is devoted to one interview this week.
Noel Casler, since 2018, has developed a large Twitter following based on his violation of an NDA, revealing information about Donald Trump gleaned from his six years working on the Celebrity Apprentice program, and before that, watching Trump in action at a teenage beauty pageant. He is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
Today a stand-up comedian working on a book about his experiences, Noel Casler spent two decades working behind the scenes at live events as a celebrity handler, with such stars as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and many others. But it was in 2015, having experienced Donald Trump on multiple occasions, that he decided to forgo his career and speak on the record about what he knew, first with the Clinton campaign (which chose not to follow up because of hubris and overconfidence) and later on Twitter, where he has amassed close to 300,000 followers.
In this hour-long interview, he discusses his background, the difference between the fictional businessman created for the two Apprentice TV shows, and the real Donald Trump, and goes into some depth about Ivanka Trump, who was his primary charge during the last three years of Apprentice live finales. He also discusses the role producer Mark Burnett played in the Trump make-over, as well as the role of Jeff Zucker in that endeavor, in charge at NBC at the time (and later at CNN).

Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket), in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky.
Daniel Handler discusses his latest novel, "Bottle Grove," set in San Francisco, along with his earlier novel, "All The Dirty Parts." He also talks in depth about the Netflix three-season series of Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events," as well as his work in theatre and how his life has changed with success.
"Bottle Grove" deals with the intricacies of marriage, along with how San Francisco has changed in recent years due to the influx of the tech world. "All The Dirty Parts" dissects what life is like for a horny teen-aged boy in a way that few books have attempted. "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is about the terrible things that befall the poor Baudelaire orphans, mostly due to the nefarious schemes of Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris).
An extended 47-minute version of this interview can be found as a Radio Wolinsky podcast. [2]

Bookwaves
Tommy Orange, author of the novel "There There," in conversation with Richard Wolinsky.
Winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award, the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, and the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. "There There" is set in and around Fruitvale and the Coliseum areas in Oakland, and looks at the lives of several Native Americans, young and old, as they converge for a giant pow-wow. The novel stretches back in time to the takeover of Alcatraz and forward to the present day, shattering stereotypes and delving into the real lives of the urban Native American.
Tommy Orange was born and raised in Oakland, and is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma.
An extended 33 minute version of this interview can be found as a Radio Wolinsky [2] podcast.

Artwaves
Second in a series of interviews about how Bay Area theatre companies are coping with the Corona Virus shutdown.
John Fisher, Executive/Artistic Director of Theatre Rhinoceros, based in San Francisco, "The Longest Running Queer Theatre in the World," since 2003, discusses how his company has managed to survive and move into the digital realm as live theatre, on stage with an audience, vanishes from the American scene.
While the subscriber base keeps the company alive, Theatre Rhino [3] now boasts a weekly one-man show from John Fisher, created in his home and sometimes on his bike, on Zoom and Facebook Live, and has begun a digital season that is intended, whenever it happens, to return to the stage.
Included in this interview is a five-minute piece focused on the Thanksgiving Battle of Saratoga, written and performed for this podcast and radio show by John Fisher.
