Rolling in surf can be really intimidating. We might have a great roll in a pool session, or in flat water, and then miss when we're in rough conditions. I'm hopeful some of these might help with the transition. Here's 6 things to consider when it comes to rolling in surf. Try a roll before the session to get warmed up/get wetIt can be a mental gameYou've got more time than you think Slow things down and focus on basics Rolling on both sides can help, use the force (wave encouragement) Practice with full gear even if it's calmThere are two examples I mention where I am referencing video clips - so if you'd like to see those, here's the link to the the video: https://youtu.be/ZsstWvqC-kwI hope these are helpful. Here's 7 reasons to consider attending kayak events. I hope these are helpful for those that are thinking about it but haven't yet. And maybe for paddlers that have only attended events nearby, maybe this will help in seeking out adventures a bit further away. List of reasons: Broad group of instructors, giving us the opportunity to learn from many different people On longer events, the opportunity to work on skills from day to day Often get the chance to paddle and visit a new place Usually events are open to new paddlers and will have suitable classes / outings Events are a great way to test out new equipment, find used and new equipment Make new paddling friends, and possibly make plans for future events and trips Take away homework and skills to work on later on I hope these are helpful. I wanted to say thanks to everyone that interacts with this channel, as well as everyone I got to meet this past year. Re-connecting with the community on and off the water was amazing, and I'm pumped for a calendar full of events for 2023. Here's 3 things to try next time you're working on your forward stroke. The forward stroke is our main way of moving our kayak, so any little thing we can do to make it more efficient can help us in the long run. For many of us, paddling from point A to point B isn't a competition. However, as we become more proficient and efficient in our strokes, we will be able to paddle further and longer with the same amount of energy. I hope these are helpful. A follow up on the discussion of differences between latex and neoprene gaskets - since I don't have access to both a dry and semi-dry suit, I tried comparing dry and semi-dry tops out paddling and surfing, as well as standing in the shower to see if any water would get in one vs the other. While it's not the same as a full suit, it might help as background info for those thinking about calmer or warmer situations where a full dry suit isn't absolutely mandatory. Here's a short one on picking up used or second hand kayaks and paddling gear. I've recently picked up a Trak kayak from a friend, and have received a lot of feedback on it. I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on it, and ask if anyone has had a similar experience. My photography book!https://kayakhipster.com/book/If you'd like to support the channel, you can do it through Ko-fi. This was a fun one discussing a new project I've been working on for the last couple of weeks, spending a lot of time exploring the outdoors. Also motivation and how I think online reviews can help us depending on how we take them into consideration - this last one coming from being told I'm full of crap, made me realize that particular overview can end up being more informative because of the "crap."If you'd like to support the channel, you can do it through Ko-fi. Hello to season 2! A bit of a routine is forming again for longer podcast content, so I'm kicking off a second season to expand on all other content being made. I will have interviews, longer pieces, and Q&A's coming up. For this one, lately I've been thinking a lot about getting back to the basics of what got us into kayaking. For me, exploration, awesome scenery, great company, great conversation. These are all things that I've always loved about getting out, meeting new friends or catching up with old ones while on the water. I had the chance to tag along with Kathryn and Fran on an exploration of Ebenezer Creek, and I had planned to enjoy myself, enjoy the company, the location, and maybe take a couple of photos. But when I got home, the gopro had caught more than I hoped, so I wanted to share along with some thoughts from the trip. Huge thanks to Kathryn and Fran https://www.savannahcoastalecotours.com/ If you'd like to support the channel, you can do it through Ko-fi.
