“My goal was to be able to create an online studio. Many people would be familiar with the Pelotons of the world today, and this was my goal 15 years ago. It's still my goal today knowing that we are not selling weight loss, but we are focused on creating movement for every single level of a human being that is ready to start their movement journey, continue their movement journey, or advance their movement journey.
“I also am very aware that people would choose to move more if we weren't so narrow-minded about what working out means. So we have dance on our platform. We have all the traditional strength, cardio, yoga, and it's ever-growing. But really the goal behind Just Move is to create movement for everybody, and to really vary the types of movement we have without ever focusing on weight loss.”

“I think the biggest thing is to know your north star. Because running a business comes with so many failures, so many mistakes, and so many learning lessons. But if you know your north star, you can consistently stay grounded. As a company now, we are so clear on the big goal, but we do not know the recipe or the path. And we are constantly testing.
Going back to my days in training, I realize the fitness industry only talks to the 10% of the population that's already in fitness. So when we look at how to help people get up off the couch and move, most “beginner” workouts are way too advanced. The people we're speaking to don't even know what a squat is. They don't know what a lunge is. They're probably in pain. They've never moved before. And that was the population I wanted to speak to and make sure that we took care of.
When we say we have movement for everybody, do we really? And so, we developed a START level. The levels go start, beginner, and intermediate. Six months into the Just Move subscription, we realized that Start Human deserves to be in their own safe space. And so we pivoted as a company.”

“Why does everybody come into the gym wanting to change the way that they look?
“I think underneath it all when we want to change the way we look; we ultimately think that by looking different, we will be happier. We think by looking different that so much of our life will change. Maybe we will be able to be in a relationship, or a better relationship, or our friends and family will love us better, or we'll get that job that we've always wanted.
“I realized I needed to meet people where they're at and encourage people that changing the way you look doesn't bring those things. It doesn't bring any form of sustainable happiness. The happiest you can become is by developing a relationship with your body and developing a positive appreciation for what your body can do for you.
“Not for what it looks like.
“It’s a nearly impossible message to sell. I am in an industry, and we live in a world of quick fixes, and that you are what you look like, especially for women. Our initial value to everyone, even to other women, is what we look like.
“And so, selling this message is a very, very difficult one. It's one that I will never give up on. It is the reason why I'm here today. And I think I will be talking about this message for the rest of my life.”

“The fitness industry and wellness industry has told everyone that if you are healthy, you look a certain way. And the reality is that's not true at all. It’s really just a way for the industry to make money because we're pushing an image on and trying to get everyone to buy products and, basically basing it on a lie.
“And so I say health is a feeling. Health is a version of you taking care of yourself, given your own circumstances. It's moving regularly. It’s eating relatively well, and hydrating, and sleeping. And that's what health is. And everybody's version of health looks a different way.
“Health just doesn't look one way.”

“Every single morning I look in the mirror and I look at my arms. My arms are huge… I have very muscular arms. The first thing I think is goddamn these big ass arms, a second later I remind myself these big ass arms help me do 10 pull-ups, 20 push-ups, crazy movement that I want to do every single day. They carry me throughout this life… they do not define me.
“It might be something that I look at because of media and because of everything else I’ve been told, but I don’t sit in that. I don’t dwell in that. What my arms look like does not define who I am as a woman. Some days I’m more positive to myself than others, but on a positive day I’d be like look at all the shit I did this week in business, in family life, and all the other things I’m proud of that are not defined by what I look like.”

“I'm trying to sell movement in a completely different way than the rest of the world... I am trying to sell movement without the carrot of weight loss. And I think every single day that brings on a new challenge.
“Every day we're fighting an intense beast. There are so many like the beauty standards and so much of what social media has done. People really believe that they need to change the way that they look to be happy. And so it's harder and harder to stay away from that and, to be doing something almost in some sense, the exact opposite.”

“I was super frustrated at the start of the New Year (and I still am) that we have made it through a pandemic, and all we want to do is change the body that helped us get through it! So for me, it's always a conversation that there is nothing wrong with you or your body!
“Can we stop entering into the New Year with what is a negative mindset and negative conversation around ourselves? Can we have a grateful conversation?
“If you wanna walk into the New Year grateful for your body you have and thankful for everything that is done for you, that's a much better start!”

“How about all of the people that are on the sideline of the fitness industry? We know that we're not doing our job because the world, the US, has never been in a more unhealthy place… And I think, as an industry, we need to take ownership of that…
“10% of the world is in fitness. How will we reach the missing 90% that are still sitting on the couch and don't think that fitness is for them? They have a body, they should be moving. We need to communicate differently to them. We need to figure out how to reach them.”

“I think that if we, as fitness professionals, own how much power we have individually and really own that we are trying to encourage people to be a healthier version of themselves. I think the entire world becomes a healthier place.
“Not by what they look like. But about how they truly are emotionally, mentally, physically. I think the entire world becomes a healthier place. And obviously, we could afford to have a healthier world right now. We could afford healthier humans, making healthier decisions, that are in the best interest of all of us.
“And I think that's where I get so excited about the potential that we have as the fitness and wellness industry. If we choose to step into that, if we choose to own that.”

“I had to start creating a relationship with my body that was positive. What she was doing for me, you know, the fact that we wake up every single day is a miracle. And yet the one thing we want to do is just nitpick what our body looks like when it is the one thing that allows you to do everything you want to do in this world. So I want to switch that relationship.
“It's the same way with movement. My evolution with movement grew as a way to celebrate what your body can do, as a way to say, ‘Thank you. And I appreciate you. And I want to be here with you until I'm 85 years old.‘”
