Amelia and Sarah wrap up our discussion of Jesus Christ Superstar, the greatest musical ever made as far as Amelia knows. We talk about adapting the same text into different productions and whether Jesus is a likable character. We also lose a couple minutes trying to do a Mads Mikkelsen impression for reasons that seemed very important at the time. Amelia gets eye-twitchingly mad at religious sexism and Sarah wastes her time trying to get her philistine best friend to appreciate her beautiful star-studded Broadway fancast for an all-female plus one Spider-man production.
We also talk about what we're discussing when we come back next month. I'll give you a hint: Sarah's finally gonna get a chance to talk about her experiences with projectile vomit.

Sarah and Amelia interrupted their discussion of the musical as a whole because they had to get the 2000 version out of their system. There is not one ounce of theology, religious studies, history, research, or intelligent thought in this here episode. There is discussion of cargo pants, the bold stylings of Pilate, Sarah's brother's regrettable hair choices, and how this Judas is just the Worst. Truly. The Worst.

Sarah and Amelia don their sequined mesh and purple leather to discuss Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, including: Sarah's powerful respect thirst for a certain actor, Amelia's basic ignorance of the calendar, and the powerful gay vibes. We also discuss the historical Mary (fun with demons!) and the historical Pilate (far less fun with antisemitism). Sarah doesn't mention this on the podcast but she ended up having to donate $8.25 in quarters to a church by pouring them directly into the offering tin, so at least one half of this podcast paid for their sins.

In the first of three episodes on Jesus Christ Superstar, Sarah and Amelia take baby steps towards understanding Jesus, jazz handing all the way. Sarah shares her favorite movie musical with her best friend who shockingly appreciates it. Amelia relates too much to Herod. A van full of hippies leave their friend to die in the desert, Judas’ betrayal is only the second most hurtful thing someone does to someone they love in this episode, and we try to nail down the basics of the last seven days of Jesus’ life.
The fact we wrote “nail down”means we have to put another dollar in the blasphemy jar.

Sarah and Amelia talk God. Amelia doesn't believe; Sarah would like to. Also, musical theater, crying in church, signs from God that we'd like to return, bargaining with God for snow days, and is this the best life Amelia could be living. Is it. Is it really. Also, today is a snow day, so as per her divine compact with God, Sarah is Mormon now.
The title is belated vindication for Amelia, who did in fact correctly remember a figure from classic American literature. No one saw that coming.
