It's way past her bedtime, but the show must go on. Tanya takes you backstage to talk to some of the driving forces behind techno and EDM whose work has been keeping her up way past her bedtime. While the parties rage on, we want to know the stories behind the music. What are these artists thinking about? What's their place in this scene? Surely this scene means more to music than drugs, bros, and berghain.
CFCF
We found CFCF in a trailer backstage at Palomosa Festival in Montreal. Don't worry, it was his trailer. He warmly invited us in to speak about his soon to be released album, L.U.V. After encapsulating different energies as sound for over a decade and 5 years after gifting us Memoryland, CFCF returns with something entirely new he's been ambitiously waiting to make. With more collaborations than ever (including Cecile Believe!! icon!!), this is perhaps a turning point in his career and I am so glad I could be here for it. We talk about Montreal's music scene, finding his identity, choosing life, avoiding cliches, and much much more. Thank you to CFCF for being an incredible guest with so much insight. It is a rare occasion where I feel like there was at least a few more hours of conversation needed. Thanks also to Palomosa Festival for graciously having us. Orphx
Christina Sealey and Richard Oddie of Orphx come on the show to explain why they've been keeping me up with their music for almost two decades. Making music since the 90s and actively performing since, Orphx has made an indelible mark in the history of electronic music. Berlin has been knocking at their door from their beginnings and hasn't stopped, leading to regular performances at every club that means something to you. They're not really techno though. Or are they? Who really cares? Industrial meets rhythmic noise meets modular synths with this duo and I can't get enough. They do it again with their pandemic-born EP, The Way Through All Things. Orphx talks about their experiments with infrasounds, being present, their conceptual inspirations, and how they haven't killed each other after 30 years of collaborating before they played to an eager Toronto crowd. It's Past My Bedtime, Orphx! If you hear me say 20 kHZ and not 20 HZ, you're wrong. Transcription available 6 PM EST. Ciel
Ciel is brought on to repent for building Toronto's underground club scene--a scene that has taken my sleep for far too long. She's a producer, DJ, label head, and so so much more that it won't fit in this box. Her unique mix of techno, acid, house, breakbeat, et al. has kept me intrigued and sent her to places like Berghain, Movement Detroit, and De School. Ciel shares her reflections on DJ culture, collaborating, asking for help, and the highs and lows of playing in Toronto and Berlin. At 2 AM in a warehouse. It's Past My Bedtime, Ciel! Space 92
On this episode, Tanya hassles Space 92 for keeping her up. Space 92 has been producing music for over a decade but experienced a meteoric rise with his new sound during the pandemic. Now, he's touring the world and enjoying his spot at the top of the Beatport charts with his latest EP. We talk about grappling with mainstream success, the world beyond Berlin, what he's learned from his journey so far, and how the hell France keeps pumping out big names in dance music. No Mana
No Mana is the first artist I confront for keeping my sleep hostage. He's a talented producer, visual artist, and DJ who recently wrapped up his tour supporting his releases on Monstercat. Last year, I DM'd him that his set was life-changing. I never got the track IDs but I did get him on the show this year. Today, he joins us from London, at midnight, before hitting the stage. spoiler: it was an incredible show.  It's Past My Bedtime, No Mana!
