50 | From the Navy to Product Management w/ Kathy Borkoski
Here's another inspiring transition story from a remarkable veteran! Kathy shares her insights, which is quite fitting as she once disarmed bombs herself! Kathy offers an in-depth look at her journey to where she is now. From mastering the roles of Navy diver and explosives expert, venturing into the world of stunt doubling, exploring start-ups, securing a dream role at Facebook, to returning to her fitness roots at CrossFit, LLC. Highlights of this episode include: Be Present and Engage: Kathy emphasizes the importance of being where your feet are and actively engaging with your surroundings. Her advice for early success in job hunting is to place yourself in situations where you can connect with key people. For her, this meant holding the dummy bag during stunt training, which has evolved into making at least two networking calls monthly. Master Your Story: Perfect your elevator pitch—your story should captivate and persuade potential employers. To achieve this, personalize it and understand the needs of your conversation partner. The framework for your pitch: be intriguing, relevant, and concise (1-3 minutes). Always Be Networking (ABN): Kathy underscores the importance of networking for military veterans. Our resumes might not always stand out for technical roles, so it's crucial to connect with gatekeepers. If you aim to be a data scientist, ensure you're speaking with someone from the data science team! This episode is packed with wisdom and could have easily continued! 25 | Army Spouse POV on Separation, Words w/ Haley Williams
This episode with Haley Williams was incredibly informative and inspiring. As promised by our previous guest, Zach Williams, who is Haley's husband, her story truly stands out. I want to express my gratitude to Haley for joining the podcast and sharing her remarkable journey. This episode serves as a poignant reminder that the challenges faced during military service impact not only the service member but also their spouse. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have conversations with these spouses, shedding light on another side of the military journey. Haley's story is unique, as they all are, but here are some key takeaways: Due to the nature of Army life, spouses may need to pause their own careers to support their service member's duties. However, this doesn’t define their worth. Haley emphasized that whether you choose to be a stay-at-home parent or take a job for additional income, your role is vital. Above all, supporting your service member is the most important task. If you're struggling mentally, seek help! Haley candidly shared her personal challenges while being part of the Army and highlighted the importance of reaching out for support. It’s not easy, but help is available, so pursue it! Community matters! Even with frequent relocations, finding and building community is crucial. It can be a lifeline during difficult times in the military. Haley was fortunate to have strong support and encourages others to find, seek, or create their own community. Haley concluded by encouraging mothers in similar situations to take pride in their current phase of life. Embrace this unique period, as it comes only once, and you'll discover much about yourself. MOST IMPORTANTLY, she expressed gratitude to God for protecting her and guiding her to where she is today. To all our listeners, this is an episode I urge you to listen to with your partner. Discuss what you're navigating together. You are a team, and Haley illustrated the importance of that teamwork beautifully in this episode. Enjoy this episode!
