Issues and Answers is a weekly public affairs program for Grand Junction hosted by Carl Hughes on KEKB. Residents and members of our community tell us what concerns they have, and from that feedback, we identify significant topics to discuss with you.

SK and Tania Alfstad of GANG (Giving Adolescents New Goals) discussed the programs of GANG, how they continued to help though the pandemic, and how they are now back offering community based sports camps, art camps and academic enrichment once again. They shared success stories and details about how their program works.

Becky Winegard, and Greg Cash, board members of COLORADO WEST PRIDE, discussed the status of the LGBTQ movement and the community in Western Colorado, how attitudes have changed and improved towards this community.

Dr. Brenda Holland, Executive Director of Families Plus, Carol Hickman, President of the Board of Families Plus, and Sunshine Knight, Outreach Coordinator for Families Plus discussed the multiple programs offered by FAMILIES PLUS, and how to access these services.

Woo Bandel, Community Engagement Manager with the Western Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer�s Association discussed the services offered by the local Alzheimer�s chapter, and how caregivers can access support and services.

The pandemic created unique problems for many pet owners, often having to surrender cherished pets due to loss of a job or housing. The Roice-Hurst Humane Society is a national leader in fully supporting both pets and the humans that care for them. Anna Stout, CAWA and CEO of Roice-Hurst discussed their motto �More Than A Shelter� and how they are helping the community. RHHS was one of the first shelters in the country to hire a social worker to help with the human side of pet ownership.

Emily Shockley, School District 51 Public Information Specialist discussed the new Superintendent, Dr. Brian Hill, and his vision for the district. She also covered the construction of the new Grand Junction High School, as well as the summertime program, the Lunch Lizard, which provides meals over the school break to kids who have been on free or reduced lunches during the school year.

Debra Hess, a volunteer with the COLORADO CANCER COALITION discussed the various forms of skin cancer and the fact that 80% of damage to our skin is done during our childhood. Debra discussed the efficacy of sunscreens, and how to use them appropriately. Debra also discussed the need for self-examination and awareness of any potential cancerous skin growths.

Sheriff Todd Rowell spoke about the threats to the community from the increasing use of Fentanyl. Change needs to start with community awareness. The focus is now on the supply chain and putting more pressure on the suppliers of illegal drugs, as well as increasing the treatment modalities available to users.

The District Attorney�s Office has partnered with Mesa County School District 51 to spearhead a one-of-a-kind program to work with youth with high rates of truancy and absenteeism, pairing them with a CMU student to help derail the path that might lead to legal issues down the road.
