In Episode Two of the series, we dive into the Cuban sanatorium experience, taking a closer look at what life was like for HIV-positive people who were forced to live there. Some residents describe the sanatoria as an idyllic sanctuary; others, as a medicalized prison. Residents were treated more humanely over time; after years of comfortable isolation, some became reluctant to rejoin society. If the sanatoria did irrevocable damage to some people with HIV, how do we weigh that against the lives they saved? And how do we weigh that against AIDS responses around the world?
