Family Feud: Struggling with Insensitivity From Family Members
29 minutes Posted Dec 10, 2020 at 4:00 pm.
: Raven notes that Olivia is stepping away from the podcast for a while.
: How family tends to be ableist, and makes a big deal about your disability.
: Family members identifying people by their disability or medical history, and failing to give as much attention to milestones and accomplishments.
: Our friends value us more as a person and make sure to include us in social gatherings, while family members often leave us out, have obligatory conversations, or react negatively when we attempt to interact.
: Family being less likely to respect boundaries as much as friends do.
: It’s easier to set boundaries and have a hands-off relationship with friends because they don’t tend to be as hung up on how your disability impacts how you do simple things.
: Folks being uncomfortable with consuming food cooked, or brought, by blind people. Why?!
: Outro.
