She promised clients discounts on normally expensive cremations, a seeming kindness in a town where many are poor.But in the back of the funeral home, Megan’s elderly mother Shirley was actually dismembering the dead. They were body brokers. Megan was selling the body parts - heads, torsos, legs - to companies that claimed to do medical research.So where did Ashley start? Megan and Shirley had been convicted, so there were plenty of court documents and media coverage to review. And then she began contacting the victims.The victims were the families that trusted Megan. When they came to pick up the ashes of their loved ones, they instead received a mixture of ashes of various people.The moment that Adam and Campside reached out to Ashley about Body Brokers was surprisingly emotional. Ashley was recovering from open heart surgery and was personally confronting issues of death and mortality. What he found was that and much more: a story about family and a window into the opioid epidemic.After Conner’s arrest, his father Tony went on to confound multiple police departments and the FBI: he robbed 30 banks in 54 weeks. But that streak could only last so long.Josh discusses his first visit to the Washington state prison where Tony was serving his sentence. While there were rules about taking notes or recording conversations with inmates, Josh found a workaround.And Tony was an open book. Rather than the story someone might want to hear, he told the unvarnished truth. And the truth was, he wasn’t chasing a high; he was desperately trying to avoid feeling dopesick. And it ruined his life.Before Tony was a masterful bank robber — and while he was a bank robber — he was a top design engineer at Boeing. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747, while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately unraveled his life.Josh and Tony went on to have phone conversations and exchange emails for years. They still do. But it’s a story we think worth learning about one way or the other.And one way is to listen to this interview - in English - with host Antonia Woloshyn. When Semiya and Gamze’s fathers were murdered, the German police did something strange: instead of conducting a thorough investigation, they focused on the families. Meanwhile the killing spree continued, with nine immigrants murdered in the early 2000’s. It even turned out that a German intelligence agent was present during one of the murders.This brings us to the NSU. The National Socialist Underground, or NSU, was a German neo-Nazi militant organization active between 2001 and 2010. The story of the anti-immigrant murders carried out by NSU members and the human rights lawyer who doggedly pursued justice is well known in Germany, and should be well known generally.Antonia and Josh discuss the making of Land ohne Vater, a story about a coverup that forced a country to face its past… again. The title roughly translates to ‘Country Without A Father,’ a play on the powerful German notion of a fatherland.An interesting note: the working title was ‘Operation Confetti,’ a reference to the shredding of key documents by officials likely motivated by racism and fear of prosecution.Antonia suggests that Germans in particular wanted to ignore this story because the country tries to convince itself that they’ve overcome its past atrocities. But this show highlights that it’s awfully hard to outrun the past and a mistake to ignore it. The far right is very present in Germany today, and that trend is echoed around the world.Land ohne Vater was produced by a team in multiple time zones, speaking multiple languages.
