Employment: Is This The End of Working In Our Pajamas?!
Hello friends, welcome back! On Friday, Daddy Dan announced that workers are free to return to the office without a cap on numbers (but still adhering to those pesky density levels). Whilst this is a resounding cornerstone of our hard work over the past year to return to "normal" life, it also spells the end of WFH arrangements for most office workers. Some are more pleased than others... So today, we are taking you through your basic minimum employment rights (your National Employment Standards, or NES) and we discuss whether your NES rights give you grounds to request to continue to work from home. The short answer is possibly but it is best to chat to your employer or Fairwork once you know your basic rights! Go forth pals, know your rights and live your best, well-informed life! ------------------------ Show notes: - Fair Work Act ------------------------ Music: Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com DISCLAIMER: https://www.intheknowpodcast.com/disclaimer

Law School: Six Years and All I Got Was This Lousy Email
Hello dear listener friends! Today we are celebrating because on Friday 19 March 2021, one half of this podcast became a qualified Australian lawyer! After six long years of studying, Samara finally reached the end (or a beginning, depending on your levels of optimism)! Due to COVID, the usual fanfare of admission was replaced by a two line email. Fun. So, to mark the most special occasion, this week's show takes you through Caitlin and Samara's journey to get to law school, how we are going with it (or went with it in Samara's case) and your comprehensive guide into how to become a lawyer - there are more steps than you'd think. We hop you enjoy this more informal chat. Employment: Bye Bye Bully
Happy Wednesday folks! Today we have the lovely Alex on the show, going through workplace bullying with us. We have all had questionable workplaces (hospo @ 15, hello) or fallen victim to a mean boss or cruel co-worker. Alex, a passionate young employment lawyer, takes us through your options if you find yourself in this very situation. It is intriguing and so useful, and we are ridiculously grateful to Alex for giving up her time. Alex is also an ambassador for Yes Queen, an Australian initiative addressing bullying in the workplace. Their mission is to future-proof wellbeing at work by erasing bullying and cultivating safe, positive and inclusive cultures. In Yes Queen's words...“We spend so much of our lives working; let’s make it an empowering and soul-nourishing experience for everyone”. Crime: For Fluff's Sake
Today we are talking about everyone's favourite topic - DOGS! That may have been click bait because we actually take a bit of a delve into animal cruelty - what it is, what it covers and who investigates it. We tell a fair few fluffy stories about the little creatures we love (a little smoodle called Norman, mainly) and implore you to report any complaints to RSPCA if you see something that just doesn't look right. We get so much love from our little furry friends (all creatures, great and small - does that trigger anyone to that ad a few years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO5qXw-WTDk). Come along with us - this one is short, sweet and a little serious somewhere around 10 minutes. Enjoy! ----------------------- Show notes: If you want to report an instance of animal cruelty, please visit RSCPA's website at https://rspcavic.org/services/inspectorate/report-cruelty/  Sources for today's ep are: - https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/livestock-and-animals/livestock-health-and-welfare/report-animal-cruelty - https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/livestock-and-animals/animal-welfare-victoria/pocta-act-1986/about-the-prevention-of-cruelty-to-animals-legislation - https://content.legislation.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-04/86-46aa096%20authorised.pdf - https://www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2019-08/Animal_Cruelty_Offences_in_Victoria.pdf - https://www.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2019-08/Animal_Cruelty_Offences_in_Victoria_Factsheet.pdf - https://www.armstronglegal.com.au/criminal-law/vic/offences/aggravated-cruelty/ - https://www.gotocourt.com.au/criminal-law/vic/animal-cruelty-offences/#:~:text=The%20offence%20of%20animal%20cruelty,to%20%2496%2C614%20for%20a%20corporation) ------------- Music: Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com DISCLAIMER: https://www.intheknowpodcast.com/disclaimer

Interview: Lawyer Life
How the heck is it March already?? We are asking ourselves the same question...it has been a busy week but we managed to squeeze in a quick chat with the lovely Maddy, a Brisbane based employment lawyer. Maddy takes us through her experiences as a young lawyer, navigating the workplace after graduation and getting involved. Maddy came out as trans in 2019 and gives us such an eloquent insight into being a trans woman while also being a working professional. Her story is inspiring and we walked away feeling both invigorated and educated. We cannot wait for you to listen! In The Media: We're Zucced
To be zucced is to be cancelled by Facebook, and last Wednesday, our dear listener friends, Australia was zucced. While there are endless play on words we can use here (get zucced, what the zucc, so on and so forth) but we won't waste your time. Today we delve into the furore we all woke up to last week when Facebook removed all news content from our feeds. Why, you may ask? Well you better tune in to - basically the Australian Government is looking to pass some legislation that spells trouble for the bank balances of big tech corporations like Google and Facebook and boy have they taken a stand. We talk the why, how and what this means for you. We also hear from lovely listener Alyssa! She reached out to us over the week and we couldn't be more excited to feature her! C'mon, slide into our DMs with your thoughts, we know you want to... ------------- Show notes: https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/17/media/facebook-australia-news-ban/index.html https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/feb/16/google-and-facebook-the-landmark-australian-law-that-will-make-them-pay-for-news-content https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2020B00190 https://blog.google/around-the-globe/google-asia/australia/top-questions-news-code/ https://about.fb.com/news/2021/02/changes-to-sharing-and-viewing-news-on-facebook-in-australia/ ------------- Music: Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com DISCLAIMER: https://www.intheknowpodcast.com/disclaimer

In the Media: It's Britney, B!tch
Ah, yes, another Wednesday is among us. This week we run you through the ever-prominent #FreeBritney movement, the Framing Britney Spears doco, what the heck a conservatorship is and why Britney has been in one for the past 10+ years (hint: this story is multi-faceted, double-sided, and ridiculously cryptic). We then finish by giving you our personal opinions on the conservatorship saga, the glaring obvious issues with the entire conservatorship process, and checks and balances (or lack thereof) in the process plus of course, there's no woman in the spotlight story without the misogyny and mistreatment that goes with it. Yep, there's a lot.
