Craig Mattick's guest is one of South Dakota’s top tennis players, with five state high school singles titles, three doubles titles, over 60 tournament wins, and All–Big Ten honors as the University of Minnesota’s No. 1 singles player. A Sioux Falls native from a tennis family, she’s also won five adult singles titles, been inducted into the South Dakota Tennis Hall of Fame, and is the former O’Gorman Knight, Nancy Rost.

Craig Mattick welcomes one of South Dakota’s greatest multi‑sport athletes, Garney Henley—ranked by Sports Illustrated as the state’s third‑best sports figure of the 20th century and a Hall of Famer in both college and Canadian football. A standout in football, basketball, track, and baseball, Henley also earned a place in the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame and was hailed as the best Class B tournament player of all time.

Craig Mattick’s guest on In Play is a true legend of South Dakota high school girls’ basketball. Undefeated during her high school career at Sioux Falls Washington, she went on to play at South Dakota State University, later returned to coach at her alma mater, and is now a member of the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame — JoElle Byre Benson.

Craig Mattick’s guest on In Play is a South Dakota state wrestling champion who went on to wrestle at SDSU before launching a successful career as a professional MMA fighter. After nearly a decade in MMA, he’s now back home in South Dakota. He’s the boys’ wrestling coach at Lakota Tech, David “Bulldog” Michaud.

Craig Mattick’s guest on In Play is a true South Dakota wrestling legend. He qualified for the state tournament six times, captured three individual titles, and helped his team bring home two team championships. Later, he returned to coach his alma mater—where he watched his own son win three state titles. He’s a proud Vermillion Tanager: Hazen Bye.

Craig Mattick’s guest, JoAnne Runge of Hartford, has been a cornerstone of South Dakota high school gymnastics for decades as a teacher, coach, judge, and mentor, earning a place in the state’s Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Since beginning her judging career in 1968, she has officiated at 46 of the past 51 state meets, helping shape the sport since its sanctioning in 1976.

Craig Mattick’s guest on In Play is longtime coach and administrator Merlin Doyle. One of the first officers of the South Dakota High School Athletic Directors Association when it formed in 1973, Merlin helped launch girls track and wrestling programs, coached basketball and football, and served as both principal and athletic director. He spent 31 years in the Wall School District. Joined by his wife, Mary Jane, Merlin—now 90—may not recall every moment, but his passion for the kids and the Wall community remains as strong as ever.
