In this episode, Brian talks with Patrick Matisi from Sangin Valley Gun Club's social media page and now non-profit. A list of topics Patrick and Brian discuss: -Patricks time in the Marines and his deployments to Iraq, Marjah/Sangin, Afghanistan. -The withdraw in Afghanistan-Transitioning out of the Marines.-Life after leaving the Military-The history of the SVGC social media page and how the non-profit started. About The Sangin Valley Gun Club (SVGC)The Sangin Valley Gun Club (SVGC) originated on social media in 2013, to foster camaraderie among veterans, civilians, and those still on active duty who had served in the Sangin District of Helmand Province, and in other districts of Afghanistan. The forum honored the fallen, and provided a platform for members to share stories, pictures, videos, and other content. Gold Star Families publicized memorial services and fundraisers to the community, and the network grew. By 2021, the SVGC included more than 14,000 people – service members, veterans, friends, and family members – from the myriad nations that had supported the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) mission, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operations, and other efforts in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. To better serve this diverse and growing community, the SVGC became a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit with the following priorities: active-duty and veteran services and support; transition assistance; education and awareness about the history and significance of the conflict in Afghanistan; and honor for the fallen. Brian chats with the author of the book 'Sacrifice' Michelle Black. Michelle is a mother of two boys and is a Gold Star wife. They discuss her story, the process of writing the book, and the impacts of war. About 'Sacrifice' When Green Beret Bryan Black was killed in an ambush in Niger in 2017, his wife Michelle saw her worst nightmare become a reality. She was left alone with her grief and with two young sons to raise. But what followed Bryan's death was an even more difficult journey for the young widow. After receiving very few details about the attack that took her husband's life, it was up to Michelle to find answers. It became her mission to learn the truth about that day in Niger--and Sacrifice is the result of that mission. In this heartbreaking and revelatory memoir, Michelle uses exclusive interviews with the survivors of her husband's unit, research into the military leadership and accountability, and her own unique vantage point as a gold-star widow to tell a previously unknown story. Sacrifice is both an honest, emotional look inside a military marriage and a searing investigation of the people and decisions at the heart of the US military.https://michelleblacksacrifice.com/
