This podcast was created as a safe space for the average person struggling with their mental health. I want to be able to have conversations that are deemed taboo especially in the black community about how our mental health affects our day to day lives so that we as a people can reveal what it is we’re struggling with, find ways to navigate through those challenges and work on how we heal . Please kindly leave a rating as well as a review,if the platform you’re listening on doesn’t have the option, please send the feedback via the link below 👇🏾 https://www.instagram.com/iamself_full.podcast/
a NOT so merry xmas…‘Tis the season to set boundaries!!
This week’s episode highlights some of the hardships that people face during holiday/festive season.I discuss how triggering this time can be for people who come from dysfunctional homes, abusive home or financially unstable homes as well as people who feel extremely lonely. I also talk about different reasons why we shouldn’t shame people who decide to spend this time with their friends or alone rather than travelling home to be with family. This episode is for anyone who doesn’t celebrate or enjoy Christmas as well as people that don’t participate in some of the traditions that everyone else does. To everyone who is reminded of the people they lost during this time, I am sending nothing but love❤️ The video referenced in this episode: https://youtu.be/jTi4F_ugV2Q The article referenced in this episode: https://nedratawwab.bulletin.com/165320035749743/?section=comments

Maybe I’ll be worthy…
Trigger warning ⚠️this episode is not appropriate for viewers under the age of 18 as I talk about sex and other sex related topics. In this episode of the podcast I have a nuanced conversation about worthiness by breaking down why a lot of people don’t feel worthy and how that looks. I talk about how desirability, colourism, texturism, relationships, perfectionism, “hustle mentality” and so much more play into how we view our worth. I also expose myself by being completely vulnerable and honest about a story of what I’ve attached my worth to and how it affected me(the story is more embarrassing than sensitive) The video about Beauty standards : https://youtu.be/UDA8xsE9jQw

Feeling our feelings as we experience them is a luxury we don’t all have!
In today’s episode I hold space and compassion for people who despite being aware of the importance of feeling your feelings instead of dismissing them as well as the importance of our mental health, these same people do not always have the luxury to feel each feeling as it is being felt/experienced or to listen to their body and rest or to get into therapy. So many times I’ve talked about the importance of mental health awareness and removing the stigma around it so that we can all seek help and heal but it is also insensitive and insincere to not recognize how in the same breath, not everyone has access to this kind of help or has the financial capability to seek this kind of help from a mental health professional. I reiterate the importance of still staying educated and aware of different things that happen to us or we do which impact our mental health so that when we find the time or the resources needed we can then apply all these lessons and break generational traumas. I am kindly sending love to anyone who is currently pushing through something and can’t seem to catch a break or find a moment to sit with themselves and reflect on the battles they are fighting and how it has impacted their mental health as a whole.

I wanted to give up on the podcast and life…A mental health check in
I would like to give a Trigger Warning about the sensitivity of some of the topics discussed such as death and grief. In this episode I talk about why I wasn’t able to post an episode last week.I give a full unfiltered review of my mental health during that period, the good the bad and the ugly. I talk about different things including my irregular sleeping pattern, why I choose to isolate when I’m not okay,my relationship with God,the importance of community and so much more of the things I felt and navigated through what was a dark period for my mental health by painting a picture of what “I’m not okay” looked like for me and in the end I talk about what I learned about my mental health during that time and what I want to do differently in dark moments.

You’re not a good person,you’re a people pleaser!!
If you or someone you know is a people pleaser but excuses it as “I’m a good person” then this episode is for you .In today’s episode I explore what it is to be a people pleaser and different ways it presents and why it isn’t in your best interest to be a people pleaser or to aim to be liked by everyone .I explain the different ways to combat that and the benefits of confrontation, communication, setting boundaries and always showing up as yourself. I also get into what I’ve learned about why as people we do things that align with being a people pleaser and why the fear of rejection often holds us back and so much more.

Unlearning in order to build your identity (Feat. Maverick, Shania, Gee, Light, Alex & Vija)
Did you know that everything children do is learned behaviour? My guests (Maverick, Shania, Gee, Light, Alex & Vija) and I answer the question “What are the some of the things you’ve had to unlearn in order to build your identity” and while it may sound like neither of us actually answered that question, the vulnerability in the rabbit hold we all went down, more or less gives insight into what we have had to learn or what came to mind when we heard that question as well as our different interpretations based on our various age groups, nationalities, genders and experiences.I also express how I’ve had to unlearn the habit of taking everyone’s advice or opinion and how it led me to a path that didn’t make me happy and how one needs to filter the noise of opinions, advice and imposed ideas in order to find the voice that resonates with who they know they are so they can build an identity or sense of self. What are some of the things you’ve had to unlearn, let us know by leaving a review and rating the episode 5 stars if you enjoyed it.

You’re always the victim…Or are you ?
We all have someone in our lives who when they tell stories they always make it a point to blame everyone else and not recognize where they might be in the wrong. In today’s episode ,I talk about how once you’ve been victimized in a certain situation you can start to believe you’re a victim in every other situation you encounter moving forward. I dive into some of the effects of always assuming the role of a victim and how it can affect your relationships as a result. This episode was not made to blame victims of any form of violation or abuse but to teach people who aren’t experiencing any form of violation to take accountability and recognize how they are responsible for what they allow in their life and to take control of their life and not watch life happen to them. By recognizing our own flaws and faults we can correct them and learn from them.
