What a great summary of the history of African Americans.
I found Professor Gluad analysis very enlightening. One day the MAGA crowd will realize that African American history is American history and if America is great it could have never achieved that status without the contributions of African Americans (especially the wealth generated by slavery)0.

When The Truth Tellers Speak, We Should Listen
I have always admired Eddie Glaud’s graceful and impactful navigation of the dark parts of our nation’s history. Pair this series with Rachel Maddow’s Ultra for a one, two lesson on why we are where we are.

The Real US History
Excellent and well done series. Dr. Glaude’s calm and measured voice allow his words to sink in and he brings up points I hadn’t considered before. A perfect example of the saying that “the more things change, the more they remain the same”.

Dr. Glaude Helps Us to See What We Thought We Knew… Differently
I learned so much from this History is US series. I can’t wait to share it with my students. Wasn’t it Maya Angelou who said when you know better, do better? This is how I felt about this documentary. Now that I understand more, I can help others in a much more relevant way. I always find Dr. Glaude’s perspectives to be so though provoking, and am grateful for this gift of knowledge he has provided. If you love history, and you want to learn more about the background of the United States, in a way you were probably not taught in school….this is your opportunity to gain an understanding that allows you to see how we have arrived at where we are now….and find hope for the future as well. Mesmorizing!

Thanks for all you do!!!! As a 75 year old southern white person, I am so distressed that many of the country’s youth are totally ignorant of the atrocities that horrified me that I witnessed in person and on the TV in my youth in the 50s and the 60s. I appreciate your work and commentary on TV also. Keep up the good fight.

As a teacher of history I appreciate the framework
I teach 20th century world history and eastern european history as well as public history and this is a very useful framework that gives citations to many of the things I’ve been yelling spontaneously into the abyss.

We all as Americans need this education
I love this podcast. I wish I could take one of your classes Mr. Claude. You are brilliant as are the others you have on this podcast. thank you so much for teaching me a part of history that was never taught us school.

Myopic hatebait
Extraordinarily biased. Admittedly a part of history not covered well in public schools. However, a reading of J. R. Lynch’s : “The Facts of Reconstruction” would bring a modicum of balance to understanding some of the darkest days of the “American Experiment”

This is us
Excellent presentation and perspectives that sheds the light on where we are still trying to be in the sea of democracy. This is truly us!

Excellent podcast
Listening As a white senior citizen, Professor Glaude gives an excellent review of where America stands in its continuing struggle to deal with the racial inequities both past past and present. This was, for me, a sobering reminder that the black freedom struggle needs to continue with the support of all who believe in the current principles upon which we would like to believe our country still stands for.

Well done!!!
History is US is not only an insightful podcast but a call to action. It helps listeners to take a look back to the ugly history of racism in our nation and connects it with the perils of today. Dr. Glaude is an engaging host and the interviews and audio clips really help bring the podcast to life. I am looking forward to another season!!!

Learning history
Excellent Pod, so relevant to today. I don’t remember learning any of this when I was in HS. Must Listen.

Excellent & prescient
As a White southerner, identifying and un-learning the deep-rooted fantasy version of our history steeped in white supremacy from an upbringing in the rural US South is a life-long exercise. ‘History is US’ is a vivid, compelling presentation that draws a straight line from the politics of today to the actions of the past, but what Eddie Glaude (and a team of fantastic historians and producers) do is something more important than just recount the history horrors inflicted on black Americans: it is a reminder of both the the strength and determination that allowed black Americans not just to survive, but to do so without losing joy. As the podcast says, democracy — as well as hope — is not a state of being, it is an action. Highly recommend.

It’s painful to listen to this history, but we must own our history and endeavor to learn from it. This podcast is crucial now as efforts to whitewash our history are rampant.

Ep 6 is haunting & wonderful. As Jon Meaghan said this morning ‘if we are only in this for ourselves, we’re in trouble’. I am in this for people like Prof Glaude and Sen Booker (hopefully soon to bd the first of 2 senators Booker), and Senator Glaudes guests.

Making the connections
This is a wonderful podcast which explores how American democracy finds itself at a critical point. By tracing the history of voting, disenfranchisement, white backlash, etc it is so clear where the country finds itself. We are in a time when the concept of critically examining history is not valued so instead it’s easier to say ‘this isn’t us’ or ‘how could this happen’. This podcast shows that this is in fact the US and it’s history show us that it was bound to happen when you continuously ignore the real issues of white supremacy within our systems. But it does end on a hopeful note and I hope the country can finally live up to that.

There is so much about our history that I did not know. This is US made me really think about this country’s history and relate it to my own history in such a thought provoking manner. This is outstanding!

A must hear
Excellent excellent podcast! I learned so much and had my eyes opened finally. Such a well researched and narrated podcast. Why aren’t we being taught all these things in school? We might be more understanding of each other. Thank you Eddie Glaude Jr. I look forward to season two

Outstanding!
I’ve always been drawn to Dr. Glaude’s insight on MSNBC where I first heard him a number of years ago. This series is insightful, thought-provoking and informative. I listened to an episode a day while taking long walks. My only disappointment was that it isn’t longer. I agree with some of the other reviewers that this should not only be core curriculum, but a mandatory listen for every American. I thought it was outstanding. RJ

Imperative
Roughly six hours that should be mandatory listening for ever citizen. As one of my favorite sources for insight into this vital topic said: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”― James Baldwin Dr Glaude helps us all to face it head on. Thank you!

An amazing podcast that everyone should listen to
As always Dr. Glaude delivers. This podcast is factual and entertaining. Dr. Glaude provides perspective into issues we face as a collective and solutions on how to overcome these issues. We must address our history in order to move forward.

The Truth Hurts But It’s Worth It
Excellent, powerful, timely, and devastating all at once. I wasn’t sure if I would learn anything because I really feel educated and informed about America‘s history but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s the nuance for me plus it’s important for Americans to understand that we have always had a choice around what this country is and what it’s going to be even though it was not designed initially to be that way.
