Math isn't about memorizing formulas and doing crazy arithmetic in your head. It's truly supposed to be about making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, constructing viable arguments and critiquing reasoning, using appropriate tools strategically and precisely while making use of structure, regularity, and repeated reasoning. I see math for this and for what it means to be a "math person"... by these metrics everyone should think of themselves as a math person! Never fitting well into the conventional way of thinking about math and running from it, math is a challenge and thus an chance to differentiate and grow our transferable skills. The feeling when you persevere in a productive struggle has kept me driven through all areas of my life.
Reynold Byers as a clinical professor as Arizona State University shares his personal experience with failure, anxiety, stress and the pressure to provide for your family, but more importantly, the resilience to keep moving your feet and working in a positive direction.
