I have my friends Jeff Martin and Joseph McFaddin on the podcast today. They run a recording studio called The Frequency Factory a studio based out of Galena, OH that opened in November of 2010. I had the chance to visit the studio and sit down with them to talk about escapism, their recording process and experiences they’ve had performing on the road.

He currently tours with Kris Allen, Lexi Lauren, Tasji Bachman, Tyler Jarvis and more... Brad and I have talked about sitting down to chat music for a while now. He has some great tips for getting out on the road, how to be prepared for rehearsals and what unexpected things can happen during a gig.

I have a special guest joining us on the podcast today, Chelsea Hall of Chelsea Hall Photography. She happens to be my girlfriend and we wanted to talk about something we’ve all experience—burnout. She and I are wanting to raise awareness around the anti-hustle movement. Still working hard but not forgetting to rest. She talks about how she started her photography business while working multiple jobs and going to school, we share what we do to recharge and we discuss what a sabbatical is and why it’s important to schedule time to rest. Burnout can happen without you realizing until it’s too late.

I have my friend Geoff Stump on the podcast today. He is a designer at Real Art in Dayton and is a local musician who currently plays guitar in Weathervein. We talk about how graphic design became a career for him and how it has complemented his music projects. Geoff has created design for many well know bands who have performed at the Vans Warped Tour (1995-2019) when it was active. It’s always inspiring to hear these stories especially when you aren’t always aware of the person behind the tee shirts, album art and logos you see.

I’m excited to be featuring my friends in Knavery on this edition of Behind the Band. Knavery is a five piece alternative punk rock band based out of Dayton, OH. You’ll be hearing from Alex, Austin and Grace about how the band got started, what they have learned so far about pursuing a career in music and why they love being a band from Dayton. What I appreciate about Knavery is they aren’t afraid to do things for themselves and really embrace what it means to do things DIY. They are constantly recording, putting together gigs for out of town bands and supporting those around them. I hope you enjoy and get something out of this conversation.

Antoine Edmonson is a Hip Hop Artist, Husband, and Father who creates music that explores the challenges, triumphs, and the mundane of balancing big dreams of touching the world with his music, all while being an intentional husband, and present father. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his album, ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alrite’. Being released in early 2020. We talk about the process of writing the album, putting together a Kickstarter and more.

Sabrina Cox has put together many benefit concerts in the Dayton area, partners with nonprofits and is a community organizer. She also loves dogs but we had to save that topic for a future episode. Not only is she incredible at rallying our community around a cause but she is one of the most selfless people I know.

Eric is a seasoned musician and songwriter from Dayton, OH. He has been active in the Dayton music scene for over a decade now. He’s current bands are Maharaja and No Balance. In addition to playing in bands he is also working behind the scenes. He shares his thoughts on staying active in a music scene, local promotion, and practical advance on booking gigs.

Nick is the lead singer of Dayton’s wildest party rock band Nightbest and some would consider him the face of Hole In The Wall where you can often find him DJing. Nick is passionate about music and Dayton as a whole. He shares his story and some experiences he’s had on the road. We discuss what it is different about the music scene today vs a decade ago. It was awesome getting to know Nick better and hear his perspective.

Sound Valley is a community driven initiative with the goal of bringing regional and national attention to Dayton’s vibrant and growing music scene. Sound Valley is a group of Dayton musicians, journalists, promoters, and music supporters who are working to build a vibrant music scene through promotion and production. They believe that by working together we can put a national spotlight on the natural homegrown talent that exists in the Miami Valley.
