Panic Attacks And Anxiety Linked To Vitamin Deficiencies

Here at our research center we have long acknowledged the connection between nutrient deficiencies and emotional disorders. While this link has been demonstrated repeatedly, a new study now confirms and establishes the fact that anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and mood swings are at least in part, nutrient deficiency related. In the United States alone it is estimated that 40 million adults experience significant anxiety episodes each year. Scientists and researchers have been trying to establish some of the reasons and underlying conditions that may contribute to this epidemic. Anxiety is characterized by feelings of nervousness and restlessness, increased heart rate, hyperventilation, profuse sweating, trembling, difficulty concentrating, and uncontrolled worrying. Of course, there can be other medical factors and/or diseases that are also contributing to these factors. The scientific community has ongoing exploration to find at least some of the factors involved. A study out of Japan recently published seems to provide an important link and insight into the connection between nutritional deficiencies and mental health. They have found that low levels of vitamin B6 and iron can trigger chemical changes in the brain, responsible for panic attacks, hyperventilation, and other forms of anxiety. The study included 21 participants, each with varying levels of anxiety, panic attacks, and other symptoms. At the same time 20 people with no symptoms whatsoever were used as a control group. The end result showed that those who were experiencing anxiety were found to have lower levels of vitamin B6 and iron than those in the control group. This is significant because vitamin B6 and iron, among other nutrients, are responsible for the production of serotonin, the happy or feel good hormone in the brain. Serotonin is synthesized directly from the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in almost all whole protein foods. The problem is that this synthesis from tryptophan to serotonin requires both iron and vitamin B6 in the process. An absence of these two nutrients, therefore, retards the effective production of serotonin, often resulting in a deficiency. This deficiency has long been directly linked to mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Further, in order for vitamin B6 and iron to work effectively they need other supportive nutrients so you can see that the situation, like most in the body chemically, is a row of dominoes. The best way to ensure that you have adequate nutrients and all the supportive cofactors necessary for their function is to take a full-spectrum dietary supplement on a daily basis. That combined with a diet high in quality protein should provide the necessary raw materials for serotonin production.
