Courtney Moore: Designing DEI Initiatives with the LA Dodgers
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) within any industry starts with one person's willingness to create change! This week on HBCU IN ENTERTAINMENT, we sit down with a woman who is shaping the future of DEI for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Courtney Moore. Courtney Moore is a seasoned diversity and talent development professional with a career that spans over twenty years. She has worked in leadership roles across finance, engineering, law and sport industries where she has a proven track record as a successful agent of change for diversity and inclusion. Ms. Moore is the Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the Los Angeles Dodgers creating and implementing the strategy to enhance the organization’s culture of inclusion. Prior to joining the Dodgers, Ms. Moore worked for the Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm and is a licensed attorney who has served in various diversity roles with Morgan Stanley, The Aerospace Corporations and law firms where she was responsible for a variety of diversity initiatives encompassing recruitment, retention and other programs to foster inclusion. Ashley McFarlin is the Vice President of Development & Original Production at WEtv/ALLBlk where she oversees new and developing projects for the network and serves as an Executive Producer on popular series including Grown & Gospel, Brat Loves Judy, A La Carte and 50 Cent’s Hip Hop Homicides. As a Howard alum with over twenty years’ experience in the industry, McFarlin has garnered a strong reputation for crafting layered, elevated stories of larger-than-life characters that are relatable, real and wildly entertaining. The journey to your dream career can often include different stops before your arrival. You may have to try different jobs or explore different industries before you find the right fit, but this week's guest experienced a magical adventure that landed her at Disney! This week on HBCU IN ENTERTAINMENT, we sit down with a woman who is elevating diverse voices at Disney Music Group, Kara Reeves. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Kara Reeves graduated with a B.A. in Communication and Culture from Howard University, with a concentration in legal communications and a minor in Psychology. Currently, Kara works at Disney Music Group as a digital marketing specialist in the Sales & Digital department where she leads fitness, voice and podcast initiatives with digital streaming partners throughout the company. Kara is a strong advocate of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts within Disney Music Group as well as the overall Walt Disney Company, and currently sits on the DMG DEI Council, ensuring inclusion and diversity is a priority at the company. In this episode, we introduce you to critically-acclaimed actor, writer, director, and producer, James Bland! Best known for starring as “Malachi” in his Emmy Award-winning drama series, GIANTS, James Bland is a towering figure in the world of storytelling and a multi-hyphenate creative with an insatiable appetite for exploring global cultures and imagining narrative worlds. His creative thumbprint is on cultural touchstones cherished by millions. Most recently, he directed the NAACP Image Award-nominated HBO documentary special INSECURE: THE END and co-wrote the final episode of THE BEST MAN: THE FINAL CHAPTERS, which holds the distinction of being Peacock's biggest-ever original series debut. These days Bland is writing on the second season of UNCOUPLED for Showtime while developing original content under his eponymous production company banner. Upcoming projects include the dark comedy series, UNCONVENTIONAL, for which he serves as a writer, director, and series regular, and the indie feature film, BEST PLACE, for which he stars alongside Marco Pigossi and Marisa Tomei.
