Natt til 29. august 1971 skjer det noe som vil ryste den ellers rolige småbyen Tønsberg i mange år fremover. Inne på fasjonable Grand hotel blir 31 år gamle Jan Petter Jensen blir brutalt drept.I jakten på morderen snubler politiet i sine egne antagelser - og både gjerningsmannen og løsningen på drapsgåten forsvinner ut i sommerregnet og blir borte. I årevis.Så en dag ringer telefonen i en liten bygd i Telemark.
