Dominika Turkcan, from Mothers’ Day Movement joins Yo in this episode. The Mothers' Day Movement is an organization that grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother’s Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates to shift a portion of Mother’s Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of the women or person they love.
Since 2011, the group has raised over $850,000, in women's health, education, infant and maternal mortality, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR.
During the episode we explore the following questions with her:
· What role did book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof have in starting the Mothers’ Day Movement?
· How did Dominika come to join the Movement?
· What are some of the projects the group has taken on?
· What are results from these efforts?
· Who is the beneficiary for 2021? Why were they chosen?
· What are ways we can support your efforts?
We hope you’ll enjoy this episode!
Note: Around 15:00 there is some content that may not be appropriate for little ears.

This episode is very personal to us – it honors my father and the girls’ grandfather. The three of us discuss his life. He passed last year at the age of 91 and this episode shares his background with accounts of how he dealt with racism, love of animals, and his passing which was done with dignity and love.
Because a couple of those topics could be triggering to someone, we thought we should alert you in case you’d like to skip:
Racism (7:05-8:25)

In this episode Kiki and Yo are joined by Birgit Hueglin-Wood, a Human Resources Executive, and they explore the following questions:
· Is there anyone on the planet who likes performance appraisals?
· Can performance appraisals do more harm than good?
· Why are appraisals still used?
· Is there bias that goes into evaluations?
· Can we just dump evaluations?
· Are companies re-evaluating how performance is evaluated?
· What is something people should know about performance evaluations? Particularly Millennials and GenZ women? Women of color?
Birgit offers five things to remember when preparing for a performance review:
1. Know that most managers don’t enjoy doing reviews. Many don’t even have the proper skills. So help them be at ease.
2. Assuming that you know the criteria on which you are reviewed, evaluate yourself in advance. Be honest with yourself.
3. Don’t waste your energy on being defensive.
4. If you are criticized for behavioral issues such as poor communication skills, being too pushy with colleagues, being too soft, being too rigid, not following company rules, ask for specific examples and have your manager model how you could have handled a situation better.
5. Don’t let the process intimidate you. No performance review process is perfect - quite the opposite. Go into the conversation with the attitude that both you and your manager just might learn something.
More About Birgit:
Birgit is a seasoned Human Resources Executive with a huge appetite for helping people succeed in their careers. After two decades in the corporate world, in executive HR roles with Aperian Global and Med America, to name just a few, she has been the Principal and Founder of People @ Work for the past 10 years. In that capacity, she can focus on what she loves the most, coaching individuals and teams to excellence.

During this episode Yo is joined by author, Holly Butler, to discuss Holly’s new book: Me, Myself, & Marilyn, Travails of a Love Hungry Look-alike. We explore the question: Would we consider Marilyn Monroe a leader?
We explore and reference the following:
· The CNN original series: Reframed Marilyn Monroe (https://cnncreativemarketing.com/project/marilyn/)
· Holly’s book that integrates quotes through-out her book and captures quips we can hear Marilyn saying.
· We recognize Marilyn’s power and ability to succeed in Hollywood through her magazine articles (Redbook magazine, “Wolves I’ve Known” article), calculated publicity events, and establishment of her own production company.
· Was she a victim, exploited, or caught in her own persona – you can decide for yourself as you listen along.
· We conclude she was certainly a powerful leader given her millions of followers today.
We hope you’ll enjoy listening to this episode and walk away with a new understanding of Marilyn Monroe as someone who was not only beautiful but a leader in her own right.
More about Holly:
Actress/songwriter/author Holly Butler had been living in Los Angeles, working as an actress and Marilyn Monroe impersonator when she first felt the burning desire to write a novel. She put her book writing dreams on hold at the time to focus instead on a new career as a songwriter -- relocating to Nashville in 1998. Having worked as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator for 25 years in California, Nashville, and around the world, it became clear to her to weave her knowledge of Marilyn and her look-alike adventures into a fictional tale of a young woman searching for love & meaning while channeling the blonde icon. This is Holly Butler’s debut novel.
