Getting Fiery with An Ember in The Ashes
This week on Getting Literate, Katie and Julia venture into the YA fantasy/Roman-inspired world of An Ember in The Ashes, lamenting unsexy protagonists, and thirsting over sexy side-characters, and appreciating the fuck out of a well-crafted villain. Katie will always think the villain is kinda sexy, and Julia can't escape a childhood-besties-to-romantic-entanglement arc. PLUS: love diamonds, Pakistani folk lore, and shitty giftbags. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution. This week's book was An Ember in The Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir . Getting Testy with The Testaments
This week on Getting Literate, Katie and Julia tackle the sequel to The Handmaid's Tale -- The Testaments. The gals delve into what class of woman they'd choose to be (surprise, it's changed!), feminists who aren't really feminist, and the twisty, hole-y timeline between the first and second books. Julia really hated all the pedophilia in this book, and Katie thinks maybe Margaret Atwood wrote Aunt Lydia as a self-insert character. PLUS: being morally against missionary work, Wuthering Heights crossovers, and trains stuck in mudslides. As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution. Older, wiser, woke-er, and bitter, the gals wonder what Stephanie Meyer hates more: women or food? Julia’s Italian background splatters like spaghetti on the wall, and Katie would like to know why Edward believes in God. PLUS: is Bella toddler-coded, why is Noah’s Flood a part of Indigenous theology, and is Bella’s clumsiness the real star of this book?As always, there's definitely spoilers, so proceed with caution. This week's book was Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer.
