How does one get arrested in Ocean Basket? Cape Town writer, published author and content creator Shana Fife joins us on the podcast to tell the story, and it only gets deeper from there.
Shana grew up moving between worlds: coloured friends and white friends, Pelican Heights and Strandfontein, the Cape Flats and the suburbs. She learned fast that there are many kinds of coloured identity, and that belonging isn't always handed to you. With no safe space, she turned to creativity, from her blog The Dirty Girl Diaries to the "Hoe With Kids" and finally her book Ougat, a title with a deliberately double meaning, both a cheeky label and a term of endearment.
We get into healing out loud and being judged for "praating uit die huis uit," finding her people among other authors, and the hard choices of parenthood. She shares how she's raising her kids differently and why she keeps violence out of her home. Shana is clear that she's no man-hater and that men are victims of patriarchy too.
The conversation turns heavy as we address the femicide crisis in South Africa. It's uncomfortable, honest, and necessary.
Plus, a round of Fact or Fake, and Shana's message to her younger self.
