This week on Gen C, we sit down with Tara Roos; political analyst, journalist, commentator, author and self-identified "Girl with five jobs"
Tara’s obsession with politics started at home, growing up in a family where the news was always on, opinions were always flying and her dad would quiz her on current affairs. Today, she’s gone from watching the news to helping make it, reporting from Parliament and breaking down South Africa’s political landscape for everyday people.
We get into the big questions facing South Africa: Why do young people feel disconnected from politics? Why ordinary South Africans care more about the price of bread and petrol than GDP and fiscal policy? Are our existing policies actually enough to tackle youth unemployment? And why does starting a business involve so much red tape?
We also unpack the experience of being a young coloured person in South African politics, the stereotypes that come with it, and the complicated relationship Cape Town has with the rest of the country.
Tara shares her thoughts on the DA, non-racialism, democracy, nation-building and political division, while Rizaan has a few things to say about Helen Zille.
We also dive into Tara’s book Where To From Here, where she breaks down political concepts like populism and hyperfragmentation, and asks whether South Africans actually have more in common than our political parties would have us believe.
And of course, we end things with a very Gen C-style game: WINNERS, LOSERS & SURVIVORS - inspired by Tara’s book.
From Cape Town politics to youth unemployment, Parliament, identity, democracy, finance, travel and the future of South Africa, this is a proper conversation about where we are - and where we go from here.
