In most countries around the world, the winner of the presidential election is the candidate with the majority of the popular vote. It's 50 percent of the popular vote plus 1 - that's how it's often calculated. The United States however has a rather unique approach determining the winner of its presidential election. It uses an Electoral College system, which does not rely on the popular vote. So how different is the Electoral College system from the popular vote system? Dr. Todd Belt, Director of the Political Management program at The Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University explains the difference and walks us through the American political system and what journalists should be looking out for as they prepare to cover what appears to be yet another significant election in the United States next year.
