Recorded in early Nov 2022. Explicit language was permitted for each MAFN Talk conversation.
Today, we're releasing our conversation with Vibol (see bio below), a Khmer filmmaker based in New York. He has some funny stories for us, like how a Spanish-speaking woman was mad at him for saying he didn't speak Spanish, his time making a ghost-comedy short film that included a freak light bulb incident and staged gunfire scene that prompted a police appearance, and others. His many years as a filmmaker has also imparted on him many lessons about the sacrifice and persistence needed to make a filmmaking career worthwhile. Listen and hear his lessons for yourself.
Guest bio: Vibol Sungkriem was born in Battambang, Cambodia amid a civil war, resettling in the Bronx, NY in the early 80s. Today, Vibol has written many screenplays. His experience ranges from not only working behind the cameras but also being skilled in the field of lighting, Pro Tools, sound recording, and editing. You can see more of his work and hire his team for film and video production services ranging from movie, commercial, promotion, and more at vibolfilms.com/.
Vibol Films is currently seeking spaces to screen their latest documentary, Khmer Traditional Ceramic Artist, based on Yary Livan, a Khmer traditional ceramist living in Lowell. Livan is one of only two master Cambodian ceramicists and is recognized for his exemplary artistic creativity and contribution to Khmer culture and arts.

A brief of what the MAFN Talk podcast series came from: This past Oct 2022, The SEAD Project hosted our Mid-Autumn Film Night, or MAFN - an indoor screen feast of Southeast Asian past, present, and futures made by SEA filmmakers near and far and was a portal for the local Twin Cities SEA community to see through the artistic eyes of SEA creatives.
Listen to our interviews with featured film artists from MAFN. Also, check out our Rad Café 2021 conversation series, on SEA diasporic political co-learning.
These films are love letters inked in the sinking struggles, sojourns, and unsettled worlds that make up the complex and beautiful weight of our Southeast Asian communities.
