This sermon is the first on a new sermon series on hope, called Bright Hope for Tomorrow.  The sermon focuses on God's choice to use the church - the beautiful, imperfect church - to be the primary vessel to carry the message of hope to the world.  The Scripture for the sermon are various verses from the 11th and 12th chapters of Hebrews. When Jesus calls himself "the true vine" he invites his disciples to cling closely to God's love, which we do not earn and that will not let us go. How do you hear Jesus' words, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me?" Some of us are, frankly, turned off because it sounds so exclusive. Others hear the words with a sense of triumph – a kind of "you're either with us or you're against us" statement by Jesus. When we hear Jesus say, "I am the good shepherd" we find comfort in those words.  Jesus promises to "lay down his life" for us, the sheep. While we can find comfort in this, there is also a charge to us.  Our action can model Jesus as the good shepherd by taking risks to follow Christ and  care for God's sheep.    Sermon preached by Rev.
