The Old Testament Day of Atonement provides a powerful picture of Jesus Christ's perfect sacrifice. On this holiest day of the Jewish calendar, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place once yearly to cover Israel's sins with animal blood. However, these sacrifices were temporary, requiring endless repetition. Jesus fulfilled this ceremony perfectly as our sinless High Priest, entering heaven's Most Holy Place with His own blood to obtain eternal redemption. Unlike the two goats used in the ceremony - one sacrificed and one sent away - Jesus accomplished both roles through His death and resurrection, permanently removing our sins rather than merely covering them.

Serving is central to the Christian life, as Jesus demonstrated when He washed His disciples' feet. The Shunammite woman from 2 Kings 4 exemplifies Spirit-empowered service through her generosity in building a room for the prophet Elisha without expecting anything in return. Her faith remained steadfast even when her son died, and she sought Elisha who ultimately restored the boy's life. This story teaches us that when we serve with pure motives and faith, God often blesses us in unexpected ways. True service means working as unto the Lord with an eternal perspective, knowing that whatever we do for others, we ultimately do for Christ.
